Ladybridge v Heyside Juniors - Tameside Challenge Cup 3rd Round

In mild, damp and still conditions we welcomed Heyside Juniors to Ladybridge Lane for this 3rd round Cup match. Ladybridge were missing Caleb from the squad through illness (get well soon) Tom, Patrick and James Y were our substitutes. Ladybridge started the match quickly and dominated the early part of the game with some excellent passing and movement in contrast to last week’s game. Cole was looking very lively and he opened the scoring for Ladybridge after a great solo run down the left and he unleashed an unstoppable drive hard and to the left of the keeper to make it Ladybridge 1-0.

Ladybridge continued to pressure Heyside with a couple of corners straight from restart but efforts on goal by both Taylor and Dion from these would result in shots just over their crossbar. Cole continued to create chances down the flanks and James was unlucky not to score from a cross from Cole when the keeper saved well from his snap shot after about 10mins. The first substitution for Ladybridge saw Taylor replaced by James Y. Heyside tried to force themselves forward with a couple of long balls over the top only to find Sam cutting out these balls with excellent headers to relieve the pressure. Josh was having a good game and was in the thick of the action with Ben marshaling well in midfield. The 2nd goal for Ladybridge came from a good cross into the area by Ben who found James Y in space who calmly passed the ball past the keeper to make it Ladybridge 2-0.

Tom replaced Cole on 20mins. Heyside's defence were battling well against Ladybridge's forward line but they did give up another goal before half time when a dangerous cross into the box was unfortunately turned into his own net by the Heyside No 14 after good pressure from James Y. Ladybridge 3-0.

Heyside managed to contain Ladybridge well before half time so it remained 3-0 to Ladybridge at the break.

Taylor came back on for James at half time. The first 5mins of the 2nd half saw Heyside’s best work of the game as they started to play some good passing football as they tried to penetrate the Ladybridge solid defensive four. However if the first 5mins of the 2nd half were Heysides the next 30 were Ladybridges when we managed to rack up 5 unanswered goals before full time. The first of these came from a sharp run and pass from Dion to Taylor who found Tom in space in the centre of the pitch 20 yards out and he unleashed a real thunderbolt past the keeper to make 4-0. Ladybridge's fifth goal was set up by an excellent clearance from feet by Conor up to the half way line that found Taylor, who promptly ran past a couple of defenders before chipping coolly over the advancing Heyside keeper to make it 5-0. Our sixth started with a pass from Taylor to Dion who found James Y in space and he dispatched a good shot into the goal to make it 6-0. Heyside had a great opportunity to score after this goal when their No 17 found his teammate the No 10 advancing forward with just Conor to beat but his final touch on the run was just too far in front of him and allowed Conor to kick the ball clear. Ladybridge's seventh goal came after a corner taken by Dion that found Cole on the edge of the box and his smart shot was parried well by the Heyside keeper only for the loose ball to find James who dispatched it over the line to make it 7-0. The final goal of the game was created after some determined work from Ben in the centre who ran forward to find Tom 20 yards out and he hit a low hard shot past the keepers despairing dive to make it 8-0 full time. Neil switched personnel on a number of occasions with substitutions throughout the 2nd half to give all the lads valuable game time.

Our opponents gave it 100 percent effort this afternoon and their keeper and defence showed plenty of resilience and heart although the final score would suggest otherwise. Heyside had a good collective attitude throughout their side that I'm sure will see them bounce back quickly from a tough cup tie defeat. The Ladybridge team, coaches and support wish you all the best for the rest of your season.

Ladybridge today operated and performed very well from front to back and all the squad played a part in today’s successful cup-tie win - well done one and all.

Our next opponents are top of the league Avro away whose current unbeaten league form at home is very impressive indeed. Our league aspirations will be fully tested by Avro in this game, so we'll need to perform at our best if we want to take anything positive away from the game.

Ladybridge v Westhoughton Rangers LFA Cup Semi Final

It was touch and go whether this game would be played this afternoon after the inclement weather of the past week. A big thank you has to go to Neil Pickup and Steve Hill whose hours of preparation in the morning helped to ensure that a playable surface was presented to both teams. The game started in bright and windy conditions which would prove difiicult for both teams to play the style of football that they would want to in such an important game. Josh, Patrick and Tom started on the bench for Ladybridge. The early exchanges were fairly even with both teams looking good on the break. The No 11 for the Rangers looked particulary dangerous going forward and it was an effort from him after about 5 mins that nearly opened the scoring but his effort just went wide of Conor's right hand post. Rangers started to press forward well in the next 5 minute spell and good teamwork and passing through the midfield found their No 16 in space 15 yards out and he unleashed an unstoppable drive high and to the left of Conor to make it 0-1 Rangers.

Going behind in games is something we are used to and from the kick off Cole was found in space down the left and was unlucky not to equalize when his shot went wide from 25 yards out. Rangers continued to play some good football and managed to frustrate the Ladybridge team with some good possession play and managed to push our lads back constantly in the next 10 minute spell. The wind was to play its part in the next goal when a clearance out of Conor's hands over the half way line found Taylor free in the centre of the field. Taylor shrugged off the challenge of a Rangers defender and charged through to the Rangers box with just the keeper to beat and he made no mistake as he slotted home to make it 1-1. Ladybridge now started to get their game going and Cole was unlucky not to score when his free kick went wide from about 30 yards out shortly after Ladybridge's goal. Both teams had opportunities to add to the score before half time and smart work by both keepers ensured that no further goals were scored. Half Time 1-1.

Tom replaced Ollie at half time. Ladybridge started the 2nd half better than they did in the first and a smart run by Cole down the left found James who in turn found Taylor just offside with just their goalkeeper to beat. Rangers No 11 was a player that caught my eye in the first half and he was very unlucky not to score when a close range effort bounced off the inside of Conor's right hand post and out to be scrambled away by the Ladybridge defence. Taylor is always threatening on the break for Ladybridge and a run in the box was brought to a quick end by the Rangers keeper whose challange was deemed a foul so the ref pointed to the spot - penalty kick Ladybridge. Cole stepped up to take the penalty but unfortunately for Ladybridge the keeper made up for his earlier error by saving well to his right. Patrick replaced Callum for Ladybridge shortly after. Rangers then upped their game after this reprieve and their No 11 again went close to scoring when he shot just wide after a strong run down the left. Rangers always looked dangerous with a direct style that kept Ladybridge's defenders on their toes. Dion picked up an injury mid through the half and was replaced by Josh. The last meaningful effort from Rangers came through their striker when he broke through strongly only to see his shot saved well by a diving Conor to his right. Ben left the field to be replaced by Dion. The last ten minutes of the game was played at a frantic pace by both teams and a goal by either would have probably won it for them but unfortunately a goal was not forthcoming and the game finished 1-1.

I fully expected there to be a period of extra time to try and settle the game before penalties but alas this wasn't to be as the officials started to organise both sides for a penalty shoot out. Rangers started the shoot out and their No 7 stepped forward to try and gain an early advantage. Unfortunately for Rangers his effort flew over the crossbar. Cole, having missed a pen in normal time for Ladybridge, proceeded to make no mistake second time around and found the back of the net 1-0 to Ladybridge. Conor now faced the Rangers No 5 and a low drive to Conor's left was not wide enough as Conor managed to push out the shot. Tom stepped up for Ladybridge's second penalty and his powerful high shot down the centre was good enough to make it 2-0 Ladybridge. Rangers No 11 stepped up to take the next penalty and Conor was in no mood to concede as he saved with his legs to deny Rangers. Dion now stepped forward for Ladybridge knowing that a successful attempt would put us through. Looking confident as he stepped back he slotted past a despairing Rangers keeper to make it 3-0 and see us through to the final of the LFA Cup. Penalty shoot out's are always a lottery and Ladybridge were more clinical this afternoon to win this one well without conceding a goal. We knew that this Rangers team would be a real test and so it proved. They created some good chances in both halfs that, if successful, on another day could have made the vital difference to the result. A well organised unit that attack quickly with pace they had our defence and keeper on their respective toes throughout the whole game. We wish their team, coaches and supporters all the best for the rest of their season.

Ladybridge are a tough team and always seem to find a way to win. All the boys give 100 percent effort week in and week out and although we would have preferred to win the game in normal or extra time their collective will to succeed allowed them to be ultimately successful this afternoon. Well done lads your coaches and supporters are all very proud of you!

Ladybridge v Woodbank JFC

An afternoon kick off certainly helped to beat the frosty elements today as we played on our old pitch at Ladybridge Lane and welcomed our opposition Woodbank JFC. Ollie, Tom and Patrick started as our subs. Ladybridge made a quick start from the kick off and could have been in front after a minute when a quick through ball by Dion found Cole free with just the keeper to beat, unfortunately he lifted the ball over the bar. Shortly after this a long clearance from Conor's hands found Taylor advancing on goal but his effort went wide of the right hand post. Josh was battling well in a new defensive position for him and was holding his own against an improving Woodbank midfield led well by their No 15. Woodbanks first effort on goal came from a lovely passing move that ended with a low powerful shot that Conor managed to parry and collect to deny the goal bound effort. Ben our Captain was working tirelessly and a sharp ball from him found James Y whose effort was saved well by the Woodbank keeper. Indeed Woodbank managed to keep us at bay for 28 mins before James skillfuly dodged a couple of challenges before finding Dion on the wing who managed to find Taylor free in the box and he turned and shot wide of the diving keeper to make it 1-0 Ladybridge. Woodbank's best move and effort came immediately after our goal when their No 7 and No 10 combined well down the left to see a shot just go wide. Cole made way for Ollie to come on with about 5 mins of the half to go. There were no further efforts from either team before half time so Ladybridge went into the break 1-0 up.

Neil brought Tom on for Taylor at half time and he made a tactical change to our line up playing 4-5-1 with James Y heading up the attack. This certainly seemed to suit us better and we looked more balanced going forward and down both flanks. Tom made an immediate impression on 5 mins when he made a strong run from 40 yards out through 3 or 4 Woodbank players before running out of steam to see his shot saved well by their keeper. Ben was playing well in the middle of our midfield and a ball from him found Tom running through on goal and this time he made no mistake by slotting home to make it 2-0 Ladybridge. Josh came off to make way for Patrick. The next 20 mins of football played by Ladybridge was a joy to watch as our passing game came together for the first time and the Woodbank defence and keeper kept several good efforts out to deny us adding to the score. Unfortunately for Woodbank Tom unleashed a "goal of the season" contender when he shot from 25 yards to find the top right hand corner of the net to make it 3-0. Neil brought on Taylor to replace James Y and Cole to replace Dion. Sam very rarely ventures forward from defence but he made an excellent run from half way through a succession of Woodbank challenges and was unlucky not to score. Woodbanks best spell of the game was the last ten minutes when they managed to push us back constantly during this period and indeed their No 10 broke free down the right and was unfortunate not to find the back of the net when he beat Conor from the angle to see it just go wide of the left hand post. The last significant move for Ladybridge was in the last minute when James made an excellent run from inside his half and beat a number of Woodbank players before he found Josh in the middle but his shot was saved well by the impressive Woodbank keeper.Full time Ladybridge 3 Woodbank 0.Our visitors battled very well this afternoon and are a credit to their coaching staff and support. They never gave up and probably felt that they should have got at least a consolation goal in the last ten minutes of the game. Their No 15 was very impressive in the centre midfield going forward and they also have a great goalkeeper who made some smart saves this afternoon that helped to restrict the winning margin to three. However, Ladybridge certainly deserved their victory and it was particularly pleasing to keep a clean sheet for the first time this season in the league. This afternoons game provided an excellent warm up for our LFA Cup Semi-Final against Westhoughton Rangers next week who I'm sure will prove to be formidable opponents as their unbeaten league form certainly suggests.

Prestwich v Ladybridge

After a successful evening against the Dads on Friday evening (Thanks for that Neil it was great and much appreciated) the Lads got back to serious league action away against Prestwich Town at Salford this morning. The pitch was far from perfect with all the inclement weather of late but it was great to be finally getting back to league business. Tom and Josh started on the bench. Prestwich certainly settled into the game better than Ladybridge and they looked a yard sharper to the ball all over the pitch. It was no surprise then that Prestwich took advantage of their early dominance after 5mins when their No 8 scored a goal from 30 yards that looped over Conor into the net. 1-0 Prestwich.

Our hosts continued to take advantage of Ladybridge's lethargy and dominated territory and possession well into the half. Cole went off injured after about 20mins to be replaced by Josh. Ladybridge eventually came more into the game and on 25mins Dion made a great run down the channel to find Taylor lurking in the box and he made a smart turn and shot low and beyond their keeper to level the game up 1-1.

Ladybridge were to enjoy the better of the last 10mins of the half and the goal that would see us lead at half time came again through some strong work down the right wing by Dion whose cross into the box was met spectacularly by James A’s flying header to make it 2-1. Just before half time Ladybridge were unfortunate not to add to the score when Prestwich managed to clear the ball twice from off the line in a real scramble in the penalty area. HT Prestwich 1-2 Ladybridge.

Ollie made way for Tom during the break and Prestwich pressed the lads back in the opening stages forcing a couple of corners, which Ladybridge managed to clear without conceding. After this initial pressure though Ladybridge really started to play the sort of game we are used to witnessing and our midfield started to finally dominate and a snatch shot from Taylor was parried well by the Prestwich keeper but James A snaffled up the loose ball to fire home to make it 1-3 Ladybridge.

Prestwich then went close with a 30yard effort that just went wide of Conor's right hand post. James Y made way for Cole after 15mins of the half. Prestwich were never out of the game and their No 6 made the most of a weak goal kick from Conor when he controlled the ball well and his shot nestled into the back of the net to make it 2-3 with about 10mins to go.

The next goal would be important for both teams and James A was to make the crucial breakthrough when he made a superb run and cross that found Taylor in space and he duly does what all good centre forwards do, as he found the back of the net to make it 2-4. This goal would prove vital as with just a couple of minutes remaining Prestwich would finish the goal action in the game with a goalmouth scrambled effort to make it 3-4 with literally seconds remaining.

Fortunately the lads managed to hold on for their first win of the New Year and take home a close victory.

Overall I thought Ladybridge deserved to win the game today and not for the first tome this season managed to grind out a result when not playing at their best. Prestwich proved once again that this league has a lot of strength and depth to it as they fought and battled as well as any team we've faced in the League or Cup so far this season.

Hopefully our Cup Semi-Final will be on next week at home against either Westhoughton or Hindley, weather and rearranged Quarter Final fixture between the teams allowing.

Bare Rangers v Ladybridge LFA Quater Final

Ladybridge were away in Lancaster this afternoon against Bare Rangers in the Quarter Final of the LFA Cup. The match was played on a 3G pitch instead of turf due to heavy local rain during the week. Ladybridge managed to practice on this surface on Thursday evening, which certainly helped in our preparations for today’s game. Ladybridge started the game with almost a full squad with only Josh missing through a family commitment. Patrick and Nat started on the bench for Ladybridge. The early exchanges in the first half were pretty even with the first clear chance falling for Ladybridge after 5mins through Ollie's quick burst down the left wing past the BR defender but his dangerous cross was gathered in well by the BR keeper to thwart an advancing Taylor. BR are certainly a strong and physical unit and their two front men the 9 and 15 were going to require close marshalling by the Ladybridge defensive unit. The next opportunity for Ladybridge was again through a cross from the left by Ollie who this time found Cole lurking in the area and his shot was parried well by their Goalkeeper and out for the first corner of the game which was cleared well by the BR defence. BR from this clearance were able to break well and the No 9 made a strong run forward before shooting just wide of Conor's R/H post. Ladybridge continued to press for the next 10mins but the BR defence held firm with their No 6 in particular leading his defensive line extremely well. Conor was called upon to make a sharp stop from their No 15 who found space on the right to force the save after about 25mins. The 10mins leading into half time however were the most productive of the half for Ladybridge and pressure was being brought to bear on the BR defence during this period. The breakthrough for the first goal was started through a smart back track tackle by James who threaded the ball through to Dion on the right who squeezed a pass to Taylor who turned quickly and shot low and hard past the GK into the right hand corner 1-0 Ladybridge. The score-line was not added to before half time and on balance Ladybridge deserved to go into the break a goal up.

Callum and Ollie made way for Patrick and Nat at the start of the 2nd half. Unfortunately for Patrick his game was brought to a premature end due to a very robust challenge by the BR No 9 within a couple of minutes of the re-start. Patrick had to make an unscheduled visit to the local A&E department to get his leg injury checked. Lisa (Patricks mum) has informed me via text that Patrick is nursing a very badly bruised and swollen lower leg this evening. Callum came on to replace Patrick. BR forced an early chance to equalize through their dangerous No 15 who shot wide of Conor's L/H post after 5mins. The next 10mins represented BR's best period of the game so far and Sam and Matt in particular were called upon to soak up a lot of pressure, which they managed to do well, preserving the narrow Ladybridge goal advantage. I felt that the next goal would be pivotal to the game and the team scoring it would really gain momentum and fortunately this goal was to be scored by Ladybridge. A Ladybridge throw in on 20mins was collected well in the BK's final third by Ben who flicked the ball onto Taylor with just the GK to beat which he managed to do with a nicely placed drive past their keeper into the right hand corner of the net. 2-0 Ladybridge. This goal seemed to galvanise the Ladybridge team and although BR came close to getting a goal back a few minutes later when their player shot just wide, two further goals in the next 10mins for the away team put the tie beyond the home teams reach. The first of these goals came through a good run by Dion who found Taylor in space who made no mistake to complete a well-deserved hatrick. 3-0 Ladybridge. The 4th goal was a real team effort with Taylor, Ollie and Dion all involved in a lovely build up that found our Captain Ben in space about 20 yards out and he unleashed a fantastic strike that left their keeper with no chance. 4-0 Ladybridge. Ollie replaced Dion for the last 5mins of the game and with a couple of minutes remaining the home team denied Conor a clean sheet with a goalmouth scrambled effort dispatched eventually by their No 10. 4-1 Ladybridge. There was no further score and the game ended 4-1 to Ladybridge.

We all knew that BR would offer us a real test as they squeezed by the Bamber Bridge Whites, a team we respect greatly, in the previous round on penalties. BR have some very good players with their No 6 a particular stand out player at the centre of their defence. Their two front men are the biggest lads our defence have faced this season and if they'd taken half their chances in front of goal the game would have been much closer.

Ladybridge fully deserved the result this afternoon and can now look forward to a home semi final against Westhoughton or Hindley in the New Year.

The lads today put on a real gutsy display against a physically challenging team that never gave up. Coaches and Parents are very proud this evening and the drive home down the M6 was not as long as it would have been if we'd been on the wrong end of the result!

Finally special mention to our injured player Patrick who we all hope makes a very speedy recovery before our next league game.

Ladybridge v Prestwich Town

Ladybridge welcomed Prestwich Town to their first home league fixture of the season on a cold bright blustery day. Ladybridge were missing Ollie through injury today but welcomed a new addition to the squad in James who started on the bench along with Patrick and Nat. Ladybridge started the half with the wind and sun behind them which helped them establish a good solid start to the game. Cole was looking lively down the wing and it was a cross from him that handed Josh an early chance that he pushed just wide of the keepers right hand post. Ladybridge enjoyed the majority of possession and territory early on and this resulted in the home team scoring their first goal after a terrific run by Josh who found Taylor who passed on to Dion who then crossed for Cole to score the first goal. 1-0 Ladybridge. Dion had to leave the pitch shortly after the goal with a niggling injury and was replaced by Nat. The visitors first effort on goal was through their most impressive player the No 6 who shot just wide of Conor's right hand post after 15 mins. The wind really was cutting through both teams and made conditions very difficult but Ladybridge managed to find the net again as Cole won back the ball after losing it, showing great determination and crossing for James to slot past their keeper. 2-0.

The third goal was scored pretty much from the restart were Cole's run and cross wide found Taylor in space and he unselfishly set up Josh who smashed the ball high into the goal courtesy of the underside of the bar to go into Half Time 3-0.

Ladybridge enjoyed the greater possession and territory throughout the half but we were enjoying playing with the elements so the 2nd half would be a real test playing against them. Matt was replaced by Patrick in defence and James Y making his debut replaced Josh up front. Our visitors started the half well and they pulled a goal back through some tidy midfield play and a break that found their No 6 25 yards out and he lashed an unstoppable drive low and to the right of a diving Conor in the net to make it 3-1.

Their No 6 nearly added another goal for his team during their best spell of the game but his shot from a free kick went just wide. This however was the last meaningful pressure of the game from Prestwich and Ladybridge's fourth goal came from a smashing passing movement that started with Cole on the left finding Ben who played a 1-2 with James before he passed the ball on to Taylor who ran through on goal to score past their keeper to make it 4-1.

Our fifth was created by Cole whose cross found Taylor in the box who nodded the ball down to a grateful James who squeezed the ball home. 5-1

We managed two more goals before the final whistle, the sixth was scored by our busy winger Cole and our seventh came from the debut boy James Y with a lovely effort that looped over their keeper to make the final result 7-1 to Ladybridge.

The Ref handled the game well this afternoon and he succeeded in encouraging a free flowing game of football in very difficult and trying weather conditions.

I thought our visitors, Prestwich Town, today acquitted themselves extremely well and their No 6 in particular was their stand out player going forward. Their goalkeeper also deserves a special mention as he was much better than the score-line suggests. He made some excellent saves and blocks throughout the game to keep the score-line down.

Our overall team effort today was superb and the commitment shown by all the players in battling for every ball was very pleasing to watch - long may it continue and well done lads!

Our next fixture looks like a real challenge in the Quarter Finals of the LFA Cup away against Bare Rangers of Lancaster next Sunday.

Bolton Wyresdale v Ladybridge Pumas - Lancashire Cup 4th round

Ladybridge Pumas are the current holders of the U12’s LFA trophy and knew that Wyresdale were well up for this fixture as they have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their campaign in the A section of the competitive Bolton & Bury League. I arrived late unfortunately and missed the first 15 minutes of the match. The score was 1-1 as I took my position on the touchline and I’m reliably informed that Wyresdale took an early lead from a corner and Ladybridge equalised through Cole shortly after this from open play.

The conditions underfoot for both teams were quite challenging as the pitch had been recently cut and the damp surface made free flowing football difficult. The first half was evenly fought out with Wyresdale always a threat from set pieces delivered with pace and precision from one of our former players Jack. Ladybridge also mounted a couple of pacy attacks down both flanks through Cole and Dion trying to pick out Taylor up front. Despite good efforts from both teams there were no further goals and the score remained 1-1 at half time.

Ladybridge came out after the break with real purpose and although I wasn’t taking any notes of when and how we scored our goals Cole added another couple of goals to his total that included a clinical penalty to complete his hat-trick. Taylor also bagged 3 goals for his hat-trick to complete a thoroughly deserved 6-1 away victory for the team.

Wyresdale are a very well organised and effective team that never gave up and troubled us throughout the game, although the final score doesn’t really reflect this. We wish them and their supporters all the best for the rest of their season in the BBJFL.

I know that all the Ladybridge supporters on the touchline were thrilled to witness our team perform so well, especially in the 2^nd half. Each and every Ladybridge player came off the pitch looking tired, having put a “good shift in” which is all we and the coaches look for - win, lose or draw!

The lads can now look forward to a Quarter Final away fixture against Bare Rangers from Lancaster on December 4th.

Please accept my apologies for the rather sparse report as I have only just been persuaded to take up the pitch-side reporting role again after a long break.

I promise to be better prepared for our next match, a league fixture at home against Prestwich Town.

Karl spoke with all the parents this afternoon after the game against Cadley to announce that due to increasing work commitments and an impending operation, he would be stepping down from all coaching duties with the Pumas forthwith.

We would like to put on record our personal thanks to Karl for all the time and effort he’s taken in coaching Conor over the years - you are a top man Karl and your input into Conor’s goalkeeping will definitely be missed.

Good luck with the operation and we look forward to seeing you on the “other side” of the pitch in future games supporting Ben and the team in your alternative role as a parent.

Ladybridge Pumas V Bamber Bridge Blues

The first league game of the season pitted last year’s league champions against the runners up. This match was never going to be one for the faint hearted. Both teams, coaching staff and respective supporters were very much on edge as we all knew that there was not going to be too much in it, and so it proved. The game started at a 100mph with Jack for the Pumas going on a great run down the left after a minute but his cross into the box just flashed over the keeper’s right hand post. The first ten minutes saw both teams enjoy periods of possession and territory but neither team really took the game by the scruff of the neck and a less than perfect playing surface didn’t help matters in this regard. The first goal came from a set piece which would set the tone for the rest of the game and it was the Pumas that opened the scoring. The first corner of the game was taken by Jack and his usual excellent delivery found Taylors head and the back of the net. Pumas 1-0.

Tyler up front was causing the BB defence all sorts of problems and his hold up play and strength was pleasing to watch and reminded me of the Bolton Captain Kevin Davies. Pumas then had another opportunity when a lively Taylor made an excellent run down the flank but his dangerous cross was cleared well by the BB defence. BB were slowly making progress into Pumas territory as the half went on and they always looked dangerous on the counter attack. However two free kicks in a five minute spell from BB changed the course of the first half. On both occasions from about thirty yards the BB player was able to cause our keeper, Conor, no end of problems. He was not able enough to keep hold of the ball on the first free kick and the BB attacker pounced on the loose ball to hammer home from short distance. 1-1.

The second free kick was just too accurate and a tadge too high for Conor and he had to pick the ball out of the net again. 1-2.

Matt our defender was forced out of the game after his hand was accidently stepped on. Matt had to attend A&E straight after the game with a heavily bruised hand. Fortunately I can report that there is no break and he can attend his first day at senior school this morning! The last five minutes of the first half saw the Pumas valiantly try and force the equalizer with good work by both Taylor and Jack coming to nothing.

The coaching staff of both teams certainly revved their respective players up during the interval and the pace was probably quicker than in the first half. BB started the half well and forced some good defensive work out of Lewis and Sam but this early pressure was seen off with no real threat to the Pumas goal. Jack had been causing the BB defence all sorts of problems throughout the game and on two separate occasions dangerous crosses into the BB box came to nothing, would the Pumas regret these wasted opportunities? BB were still very threatening on the counter and they had a couple of good efforts in the next 10 minute period with one cross testing Conor’s handling to the full. The next goal was scored by the Pumas and again it came from a set piece play. Caleb’s free kick from 35 yards came out to James whose shot was deflected past the BB keeper for the Pumas 2nd. 2-2.

Pumas continued to press forward after the goal and Jack, Tyler and Cole all had efforts in the area and another free kick from Caleb caused panic at the heart of the BB defence but they were resolute and repelled all this pressure effectively. The pivotal moment in the match came with about 5 mins of normal time remaining and it would end in heartbreak for the home team. A familiar set piece from a free kick from the powerful BB player resulted in loose handling again from Conor and into the back of his net. 2-3.

Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time left for the Pumas to mount a significant fight back although a late effort for the Pumas was disallowed correctly for offside. The game finished 3-2 to BB and they have snatched the first 3 points of the season from one of their fiercest rivals, so they will have gone home very happy. I cannot say with hand on heart that their overall play deserved it but they found a way to win and as we all know possession and chances do not win games, but hey that’s football!

I’m sure the Pumas will be hoping to bounce straight back on Sunday and all the players, especially our new lads, will have learnt a great deal from taking on and ultimately losing to an effective and dangerous team like BB.

I think it is also very important to mention that I thought that the young referee was a real credit to his profession and both sets of supporters (me included) and coaches need to respect his decisions as he can only give what he sees!

The Pumas and the Blues are both excellent teams that are backed by dedicated coaches and a passionate support that I know will probably never see eye to eye on anything that happens on the pitch, but I genuinely hope that there is a grudging respect for each other after the game (I know BB monitor these reports as I do theirs ha ha) as both teams have some real talent within them and I’m sure that at the end of the season we’ll both be in the mix for the league title.

Of course we will look forward to the return match against the Blues as these are the type of games that we all love to be a part of rather than the less competitive 8,9 or 10 nil scorelines we both get involved in from time to time.

Ladybridge Pumas v Charnock Richard - 1st Round Lancashire Cup

A bright and sunny morning greeted both teams to the Pumas new home for this season at Ladybridge Lane. Josh, Callum and Cole were on the bench at the start of the game. The match started brightly for the home team with a couple of efforts in the early minutes from both Taylor and James. Dion and Tyler were looking lively up front and Dion came close to opening the scoring after a cross/shot hit the crossbar after 8 mins. Pumas continued with good pressure and the CR defence, particularly their goalkeeper, were doing well to repel this offensive effort. Taylor, Ben and Lewis were looking sharp in the midfield and continued to drive the team forward. The deadlock was eventually broken after 10 mins by an excellent effort from 15 yards by one of our new boys Taylor. Pumas 1-0.

Taylor went from scorer to provider shortly after as his cross, after a rampaging run down the right, found Jack lurking in the box to coolly head home from close range for Pumas 2nd.

Pumas 2-0.

Pumas dominance was really telling during the next 10 minute period and after a goalmouth scramble from a corner, last season’s top scorer Dion found the back of the net for his first of the season. Pumas 3-0.

Conor had not been tested in the half so far but his goal was threatened when CR’s tricky No 11 was unlucky to see his shot go just wide of Conor’s left hand post after 25 mins. Pumas completed the scoring in the first period with Jacks third goal of the half. Pumas 5-0 half time.

The pattern of play at the start of the 2nd half was pretty similar to the 1st with the Pumas controlling possession and territory. Cole scored the first goal of the 2nd period with a screaming effort from 20 yards out that the excellent CR keeper had no chance with. Pumas 6-0.

The next ten minutes saw the opposition enjoy their best period of pressure so far in the game and tested Conor and his defensive unit of Sam, Caleb and Matty to the full. They all proved up to the task doing well to restrict and prevent the CR attack scoring. Jack capped off a fine overall display by adding two further goals to make his tally an impressive five in the game and put the Pumas score to 8-0.

The CR team continued to battle to the end and their resolve and effort to try and pinch a consolation goal never wavered. However the scoring in the game was brought to a close by a goal from Josh from a corner taken by Jack. Pumas 9-0 Full Time.

A good solid performance by the Pumas squad this morning with all the lads getting important game time in before the Premier League opener on Tuesday. I’m sure all the Pumas team, coaching staff and support would join me in wishing the Charnock Richard team a successful league campaign this season in the Central Lancs A section.

Ladybridge Pumas v Bamber Bridge Blues

This final game of the 09/10 season appropriately brought together the Premier League's top two teams with Brig having beaten Pumas in the Cup Final and Pumas having already clinched the Championship title. Pumas were defending their proud 100% record and Brig were out to show that their Cup win was no fluke. With star Blackburn Rovers forward El Hadji Diouf dropping by to watch a bit of the game on a cold night all was set for a thrilling show-down.
Pumas attacked right from the start and forced a corner on the left which could only be parried by the keeper but it fell safely and was scrambled away. Caleb pushed up on the right flank and fed a nice pass down the wing to Dion who was looking lively. He tried to cut inside but was closed down with close attention from two defenders but won a free kick. Caleb delivered accurately but no one managed to connect. Then Ben gained possession in midfield and laid on a beautiful pass to Dion again on the right flank. He worked his way inside and managed to deliver a good shot only to see it well saved. It was all Pumas but after 6 mins Brig got into Pumas half for the first time and broke down the left. Their forward showed great skill and strength in retaining the ball under the severest pressure from two Pumas defenders and managed to cross the ball which was hit powerfully from 15 yards through a crowded penalty area and past Conor's despairing dive. 0 - 1.
A scrappy period followed with neither side able to carve out any meaningful chances. Both defences were looking in control with Sam and Lewis working hard for Pumas and neither keeper was seriously tested. Dion had a good run down the right wing and saw his cross fail to find a Pumas' forward and then he suffered a crunch tackle which hurt him. After 23 mins Brig won a corner on the left which was delivered accurately onto a forward's head to force a good save from Conor. A minute later Brig broke through again down the centre skilfully retaining possession. An inch perfect pass was made for the right winger to run onto and thunder an unstoppable shot to the right of Conor's outstretched fingertips. 0 - 2.
Pumas tried to hit back quickly with Callum and Matt combining well but Tyler's shot went just wide and a couple of minutes later a similar miss was made at the other end by Brig.

With the advantage of the slight downslope and a breeze at their backs Pumas could reasonably hope for better things in the second half but after only 2 mins they conceded a corner on the right which was delivered high and deep for a brilliant headed goal which found the top corner of Pumas net. 0 - 3.
Elliot, Jack and Robert were brought on to try to change the way the game was flowing but the Brig defence weren't yielding. Elliot's pass found Dion in space but his powerful shot soared over the bar. A minor goalmouth scramble at the Brig end after 9 mins gave Elliot a chance from short range and he made no mistake by prodding the ball home in typical fashion. 1 - 3.
Surely this would give Pumas the incentive to mount a strong fight back but Brig were very well organised and showed some tremendous individual skills. Another Brig corner found a forward's head with Pumas relieved to see the effort go narrowly over the bar. Then after 22 mins a strong Pumas attack down the right ended with a powerful shot from Caleb whistling over the bar also. In the final minute Dion managed to find the net with a clever finish but was judged to have been off-side.

It has to be said that this was not one of Pumas best efforts and it was disappointing to lose that coveted 100% record in the last game of the season. Having said that let's not take anything away from Bamber Bridge who have now beaten us convincingly twice in the past two weeks. However, the fact remains that this has been a most successful debut in the Central Lancs JFL finishing as Premier League Champions and Cup runners up. Pumas have won 21 of their 23 matches played - an outstanding record of which all team players and coaches should be proud. Congratulations to Wayne and Karl for bringing the lads to this level and coaching them not only in playing skills but in a high standard of behaviour and sportsmanship. Well done everybody.

Cadley v Ladybridge Pumas

Unusually the match reporter was not pitch side for this evening match. His location was about 3 miles out at sea off the Portland coastline onboard a Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship with a mobile phone clamped firmly to his ear listening to patchy commentary from his good lady. To say that this was an important game for the Pumas would be a massive understatement. After suffering their first loss of the season in the Cup Final on Sunday, Pumas hadn’t had too long to lick their wounds before this pivotal away game against 3rd placed Cadley. Avoid defeat and the League title would be secured for the Pumas in their debut year in the CLJFL. The weather was set fair and the match started at a good pace with both teams enjoying equal possession in the first ten minutes. There were no clear chances for either team but I got the feeling that the momentum was slowly turning towards the Pumas and after 15 mins a chance fell to our top scorer Dion who duly obliged to open the scoring for us and prompted quite a large shout from somebody on a ship! The first goal was always going to be important and this seemed to settle the Pumas nerves and they played some good controlled possession football for the rest of the half and led deservedly at half time 0-1.
Cadley started the 2nd half well and forced the Pumas back from the kick off and were trying to press for the equalizer. The Pumas defence were coping well with this early pressure and managed to keep the Cadley forwards out. After 50 mins of play a great opportunity presented itself to Robert who couldn’t quite finish the chance to get the Pumas 2nd goal. Within 2 mins of this miss Robert was presented with another similar chance but this time with a much better result for him and the Pumas, as his shot found the back of the net. 0-2.
The second goal was very significant and the third for the Pumas followed a short time later after a goalmouth scrambled clearance only found Jack on the edge of the box and he showed superb composure to chip the ball over the Cadley keeper to make it 0-3 to the Pumas. Cadley never gave up and with about ten mins left they were able to peg a goal back from a corner that was headed past Conor to make it 1-3. The goal action had finished for the evening and the match finished 1-3 to the Pumas.
This was a massive result for our boys and they deservedly clinched the Premier League title with a game to spare. Cadley were worthy opponents and their team, coaches and supporters sportingly applauded our lads at the end of the game recognising their achievement in winning the League. Cadley - that fantastic gesture was really appreciated by all present for the Pumas and showed your clubs class and I only wish I could have been there to witness it.

Our last league game fittingly will be against the Cup winners Bamber Bridge at home. I have a feeling it could be a good one.........

Ladybridge Pumas v Bamber Bridge Blues CUP FINAL

This was Pumas biggest game of the season so far and it was fitting that the two outstanding teams in the Premier league should meet in this keenly anticipated final. The venue was Tarleton's immaculate full size pitch which would suit both of these teams who like to play open, passing football. The conditions were perfect with the sky slightly overcast and a light breeze after a little overnight rain.

It was clear from the outset that Bridge were highly motivated for this encounter and were anxious to gain revenge for the league defeat against Pumas earlier in the season. Pumas defence was stretched several times and Sam, Caleb and Ben had to work particularly hard to keep the Bridge forwards at bay. Tom was being stretched by the very quick right winger but coolly dealt with each situation. Pumas wingers were being comfortably handled by the Bridge full backs and Dion wasn't getting the kind of service on which he usually thrives. Dion's pair of goals the last time these teams met had clearly not gone un-noticed and he was marked by two defenders wherever he went. After 13 mins Bridge broke down the right flank and with two forwards bearing down on goal Sam made a great tackle to avert the danger at the expense of a corner. The ball was well delivered into the Pumas 6 yard box and as it was deflected towards Conor he was unable to gather it and a Bridge forward was on hand to hit the ball home. 0 - 1.
We have seen Pumas go behind previously this season and it usually has the effect of spurring them to greater effort and this was no exception. They pressed hard for the equaliser without creating any clear chances and the competent looking Bridge keeper wasn't put under any pressure. Indeed for all their hard work, Pumas looked vulnerable to counter-attacks and there were two such instances which were only thwarted by desperate tackles from first Sam and then Caleb. Then Jack worked hard on the left to force a corner which he took with his usual skill. However, because the pitch was wider and the breeze was coming from Pumas right the ball wasn't quite getting to the heart of the danger area as usual and Bridge cleared for another corner and then another two in quick succession before the Bridge defenders scrambled the ball clear without a Pumas forward being able to make contact in four attempts! Eddie made several attempts to break through down the centre but he was well monitored by the defence each time. As the half time whistle approached Ben delivered a beautiful pass to Jack who skilfully made space for himself and his shot forced the keeper to make an excellent save. Half time 0 - 1.
Pumas came out for the second half looking much more dangerous and spent much more time in their opponents' half but still couldn't create any clear attempts on goal. Ben was catching the eye with his work rate as he tried to motivate his team by example but the Bridge defenders were very well organised. After 36 mins a good combination of passes down the left wing culminated in Dion delivering a very high cross into the Bridge penalty area and with Pumas forwards in attendance the keeper fumbled his attempt to gather the ball but made sure on his second try. Bridge cleared the ball quickly upfield and caught the Pumas defence stretched giving their forward a one on one opportunity but Conor spotted the danger and dashed off his line to smother the shot. Lewis, Matt and Callum were all brought into the action on several occasions without being able to stamp their usual authority on proceedings. On 42 mins Bridge crossed from the left to give an opportunity for a shot from 10 yards which Conor saved well diving to his right to push the ball against the post from where it bounced out before being scrambled away for a corner. After 45 mins good work by Pumas gave Jack a chance to shoot but his effort was well saved. Pumas were dominating possession now and pressing for the equaliser when suddenly, out of nowhere the ball came to Robert unmarked just inside the penalty area but his quick shot missed the target and Bridge could breath again. Shortly afterwards a good combination of passes down the right wing led to an accurate cross from Robert which found Elliot on the edge of the 6 yd box but his attempted volley was mis-hit and ended tamely in the keeper's grateful arms. With Pumas desperate for a goal and the full-time whistle quickly approaching there was a scramble in the Pumas penalty area and the ball came loose to a Bridge forward whose shot was too hot for Conor to hold and again a Bridge forward was on hand to tap home for the clinching goal. 0 - 2.

This game was a great advertisement for all that's best in Junior football. Two highly skilful teams with a healthy respect for each other's abilities and a determination to play competitively but fairly. On this occasion Bamber Bridge brought their 'A' game to the park and, with nothing to lose, threw everything they had at Pumas and deserve our warmest congratulations for inflicting the first defeat of the season on Pumas. Well done both teams.
With only two games remaining in the League programme, Pumas must now pick themselves up and ensure that they clinch the League Championship in convincing style.

Ladybridge Pumas v Longridge Town

This was Pumas 20th competitive match of the season and having won the last 19 they were in no mood to sacrifice that record tonight. With Tyler still out and Elliot ill, Sam's unfortunate accident on Sunday became more significant. Tough character that he is though meant that he still wanted to play even in some pain! Even though Longridge are at the bottom of the league their recent form has been good including losing by the odd goal in five to Bamber Bridge. They clearly shouldn't be underestimated.
Sam started as sub and the early exchanges were scrappy again as the hard pitch and lively ball made close control difficult. Callum was busy at the heart of defence and made some timely tackles and clearances. One ball came out to Ben, ever lively at the centre of the action and he fed a lovely through ball to Dion who used his great turn of speed to lose his marker and shoot home from 10yds after 3 mins. 1 - 0.
Pumas continued to press and the Longridge defence coped well with the pressure. A long clearance from their own half after 5mins found the Longridge centre forward being shadowed by two Pumas backs but a tremendous sprint left them for dead and his accurate shot soared over Conor's head for a marvellous goal. 1 - 1.
Pumas dominated possession and had many attacks bringing the excellent Longridge keeper into action many times. Caleb in particular had a powerful shot fingertip saved for one of many corners which Longridge defended well from Jack's accurate deliveries. Lewis and Matt were looking increasingly confident as they frequently linked up with the forwards but the final delivery just wouldn't come right. At one point two Pumas forwards broke through only for the ref to blow for a free kick for Pumas when he should surely have allowed advantage. Just before half time Dion and Robert combined well on the right to set up a chance for Lewis who saw his rocket of a shot crash against the bar and rebound safely into the keeper's arms. H.T. 1 - 1.
The second half started with Pumas playing up the slight slope with the bright setting sun behind them. Early work by Robert on the right wing saw him deliver a good cross which just missed being converted by Dion. Jack was busy on the left wing and Dion was delivering his trademark long throw-ins into the penalty area but the increasingly active Longridge keeper was dealing with everything that was thrown at him. Eddie caught the eye with a great solo run from the half way line evading the attentions of two defenders to release a decent shot which went just wide. Sam was itching to join the action and after 45mins he got his chance when Robert gave way to him. Before he had even touched the ball Tom won a tackle and the loose ball came to Eddie who controlled it well and shot home from 10 yds. 2 - 1.
2mins later Caleb gained possession on the right and shot powerfully from 20yds which the keeper could only parry to the feet of Lewis hungrily backing up for a simple tap-in. 3 - 1.
Pumas were dominant now and Jack produced a terrific shot which the keeper brilliantly saved. Excellent football. 20mins Robert came back on for Jack and two mins later a loose ball came to Eddie who cleverly shot over the keeper into the corner of the net for a very skilful goal. 4 - 1. In attempting the save the brave Longridge keeper hit his head against the post sustaining a painful, though thankfully not serious accident. This reduced Longridge to 10 men and their substitute keeper did a great job in keeping Pumas at bay for the remainder of the game despite many good attempts by the rampant Pumas forwards.

This result means that Pumas are 6 pts clear at the top of the league with just two games remaining. One more point required to secure top place as goal difference isn't taken into account. Well done boys. You deserve this success for the skilful, fair way you play the game and for your fitness, commitment and team spirit. Congratulations also to your coaches Wayne and Karl who have guided you all the way. However, we mustn't get carried away too soon. There are still three very important games to be played before that very rare accolade of going through a season unbeaten can be claimed.

Ladybridge Pumas v Gillibrand Warriors CUP SEMI FINAL

After their nail-biting quarter-final victory over BAC this match against a team from the 'A' division would be a stroll in the park for Pumas - wouldn't it? Right? Wrong!!

Pumas were missing Tyler who is out for three weeks and the starting line up saw Eddie and Elliot on the subs bench. It was a bright dry Spring morning with a very hard surface to the pitch which would prove to be a significant factor as both sides struggled to get the ball under control. The first half was a scrappy affair with the ball bouncing all over the place and suiting the Warriors' long ball tactics. Much of the play took place in mid-field with no good chances falling to either team. H.T. 0 - 0.
Elliot and Eddie came on for Robert and Tom and Pumas immediately looked sharper than they had in the first half. A lovely move down the left involving several Pumas players making good passes and keeping the ball on the ground led to a shot from Ben which went wide. Then down the right wing a 50/50 ball was tenaciously won by Elliot but his shot also just missed the target.
A good long clearance from Conor set up another attack which resulted in a corner for Pumas on the left which was well defended by Warriors. Then, in end to end exchanges, Warriors won a corner on their left which was beautifully delivered into the heart of Pumas 6 yd box but it was safely scrambled clear. Warriors were awarded a free kick 25 yds out on the right and their dead ball specialist hit it beautifully after the ref had moved Pumas wall back. Conor flung himself high and wide to his right to make a fingertip save and turn the ball past the post for a corner.
After 45mins Dion made a strong run down the left and his shot/cross went across the face of the goal from where Elliot, backing up and unmarked , was inches short of making contact with the goal wide open. Warriors broke immediately and a long clearance upfield found their centre forward with space and time to control the ball which he did very skilfully and placed an accurate shot wide of Conor's dive to his left. 0-1.
This shock seemed to galvanise Pumas into the kind of team performance that we know is in them. First there was a quick break down the left culminating in a mis-hit shot wide of the mark by Eddie then after 50mins a bit of head tennis in the Warriors penalty area gave Jack a shooting chance which frustratingly also went wide. Just as we were beginning to fear that Pumas would never score, a good move down the left gave Dion a rare bit of space and he powerfully beat the keeper from a narrowish angle. 1-1
A lovely run down the right wing by Elliot saw him play an accurate through ball to Dion who was closed down quickly by two defenders. Then after 56mins another combination of passes down the left gave Jack an opportunity which he didn't waste. His thunderball left foot shot nearly broke the net as well as breaking the hearts of the valiant Warriors. 2-1
As the clock ticked down Pumas kept most of the possession and were never seriously threatened again.

Some of the lads in the Pumas team had played a lot of football recently and one or two key players looked a bit tired. The hard pitch made controlling the ball difficult and negated what should have been our greater footballing skills. Having said that the Warriors came and fought tooth and nail for what would and could have been a remarkable victory. Pumas showed great character and resolve to recover from the shock of going behind and in the end this was a very creditable victory. Roll on the Cup Final!!

Ladybridge Pumas v Tarleton Corinthians

It was time for Pumas to get back to league action with this potentially difficult game against in- form Tarleton who had recently beaten BAC.

Pumas were missing wingers Eddie and Robert on holiday and goal poacher Elliot reported sick so the squad was reduced to a bare eleven with no subs available.
The game started with Tarleton having the advantage of the slight slope and a light breeze on a bright and dry spring day in perfect conditions. The first 2mins saw the teams testing each other before Pumas won a corner beautifully delivered from the right onto Tyler's head by Jack for an early goal. 1 - 0.
A further Pumas corner a minute later was well defended by Tarleton who then had a sustained period of attacking which brought Callum into action and Sam made a well-timed tackle to ease the pressure. Two consecutive Tarleton corners produced dangerous looking situations but Caleb and Tom dealt with the threat. Tarleton were still attacking in numbers and Lewis made a good interception to release a great through ball to Tyler who forced another corner from which several Pumas shots on goal were well blocked by the Tarleton defenders at full stretch.
A good run down the left wing on 15mins by Jack ended with a cross which no-one could connect with and then a good combination of passes on the right wing resulted in a cross to Jack who drove the ball home with a powerful and accurate shot. 2 - 0.
Immediately from the re-start Pumas regained possession and Tyler fired an unstoppable effort from long range on 16mins. 3 - 0.
Following some scrappy play on the right touchline Tyler won the ball and delivered an inch perfect through pass to Dion whose shot went over the bar with just the keeper to beat. After 21mins following good work down the left the ball came to Matt unmarked on the edge of the 6yd box. His snap shot crashed against the post and went out of play. The rest of the half saw Pumas edging possession with Tarleton's dangerous looking breaks being efficiently nullified by Pumas well organised back four. Ben and Lewis were also working hard in mid-field.
Half time 3 - 0.
Pumas attacked right from the re-start and forced a corner on the left. The headed clearance came to Lewis on the edge of the penalty area but his shot whistled over the bar. From the resulting goal-kick the ball came to Callum who controlled it well before delivering an accurate pass to Tyler who duly completed a very impressive hat-trick. 4 - 0.
A minute later Tyler carved out an even better chance but his goal effort found the wrong side of the post. On 40mins Tyler was again in action, this time delivering a lovely pass from the half way line for Dion on the right to run onto in typical fashion but his long range shot went just wide of the mark. A minute later Jack made a good run down the left and placed an accurate shot to the keeper's left. He could only get his fingertips to the ball which was eagerly pounced on by Matt who was backing up well for the easiest of tap-ins. 5 - 0.
Ben showed great determination 6mins later in winning several consecutive 50/50 challenges before feeding a lovely pass to Jack who shot over the keeper from 15yds. 6 - 0.
Tarleton weren't giving up and Tom was called on to make some timely challenges and Conor had to be alert to come off his line quickly. Pumas were just as keen to keep a clean sheet as they were to score at the other end. A further Pumas attack gave them a corner and Jack produced an inswinger from the right which found Sam's head but it went wide of the post. After 52mins a bout of head tennis in midfield resulted in Jack gathering the ball on the right wing to where he had switched but again the shot went just wide. A couple of minutes later Pumas won two consecutive corners and from the second, from the right, Lewis powered home a short range header. 7 - 0.
As the clock ticked down Ben, Sam and Lewis combined well in midfield to set up another chance for Tyler but his flicked shot went just wide.

BAC/EE v Ladybridge Pumas CUP QTR FINAL

The Pumas arrived at BAC’s ground knowing that this game would offer us the sternest of tests as the two previous meetings in the league had only gone our way by the odd goal - we were not to be disappointed! The weather was set fair and the pitch was presented in excellent condition.
Eddie and Robert were today’s subs. The match started with early forays into the BAC half of the pitch by the Pumas with a couple of early efforts dealt with effectively by the BAC defence and keeper. A rasping shot by Dion after five minutes went just by their keeper’s right hand post. The opening goal was taken extremely well on ten minutes by the dangerous No 11 for BAC and Conor had no chance as the ball hit the back of the net 1-0
This is the first time in a while that the Pumas had been behind in a game and they responded magnificently as Dion pretty much from the kick off charged forward on a solo run which was ended by him lobbing the BAC keeper for a vital equalizing goal 1-1
The pace of the game was quite frantic at times and the Pumas were making lots of chances but to no avail. BAC looked very dangerous on the break and Sam and Caleb were kept busy at the back trying to keep their two front men quiet. Jack started the move for the Pumas second goal with a strong run down the left and his pinpoint delivery into the box was controlled beautifully by Dion who duly smashed the shot home for his second goal of the game 1-2
Both midfields were struggling to dominate the centre of the pitch and BAC’s direct approach had the Pumas defence back peddling on more than one occasion and smart work by Sam in particular at the back was just about keeping these BAC attacks at bay. Unfortunately for the Pumas, failure to get the ball clear from our area from a BAC throw in, resulted in the equalizing goal from BAC with 5mins left to the end of the first half. 2-2
There were no further goals added before the break so it remained 2-2 and this as a fair reflection on both teams efforts throughout the 1st half.
Eddie and Robert came on for Callum and Elliot at the start of the 2nd half. The game started as the 1st half ended with both teams fully committed and no effort was being spared by either team. Ben had the first attempt of the half on goal with a shot that just went over the bar on 5mins. BAC frequently attacked with real purpose and Sam was immense at the back in this period and he seemed to me to be everywhere. It’s a testament to the BAC team that our first corner came after 45mins of play and this was dealt with well by the BAC defenders. Robert was looking lively down the right wing and he was unlucky not to get on the score sheet after being set free by a great pass by Dion - unfortunately his shot went by the right hand post. BAC had a good effort saved well by Conor after 50mins and the final ten minutes of the game was nip and tuck with action at both ends of the pitch. Unfortunately neither team were able to break the other down and at full time the score remained 2-2.
Could a period of 20 mins extra time separate these two battling teams? No is the simple answer. Chances at both ends with Conor making a particularly good save to keep out BAC and an effort by Dion at the death that could have settled it after a good 30yard run but unfortunately his shot just went wide. So the Cup tie would have to be decided on penalties.

The boys on both teams looked quite calm before the shootout. I can categorically state that both sets of parents and coaching staff on the sidelines were not! The following commentary is quoted directly from my notes.
BAC win the toss and they elect to start the shootout. Their No 15 steps up and is successful 1-0 Caleb is first up for the Pumas and launches a high shot straight down the middle and in 1-1
BAC No 7 places a great shot to Conors right 2-1
Lewis is next in line for the Pumas and his effort is nearly parried by their goalkeeper but the ball ends up in the back of the net. 2-2
No 11 for BAC is next and he makes no mistake with a great effort 3-2
Tyler unfortunately misses the Pumas next penalty 3-2
The next BAC player is successful from the spot 4-2
Dion must score to keep us in the game and he does 4-3
BAC No 12 steps up knowing that he can put his team through to the Semi-Finals but Conor pulls off a superb save to deny him 4-3
Jack is next for the Pumas to keep us alive and he makes no mistake. 4-4. Sudden death.
BAC’s No 9 steps up and slots a great shot in to make it 5-4
Pumas MOM Sam is next and shoots high and straight to make it all square at 5-5
BAC No 3 kicks wide and misses. 5-5
Matt can put the Pumas through if he is successful but no - he hits a shot onto the crossbar 5-5 will this ever end?
BAC No 5 steps up to the mark but Conor makes another stop to deny him 5-5
Elliot has our second chance to put us through to the Semi-Finals. Thankfully Elliot is more than capable and he fires his shot into the net. The Pumas are victorious 5-6 on penalties.

This is the cruellest way to end any football game and the shootout, just like the game, could have gone to either team. It was our turn today and our boys enjoyed the spoils – this time. BAC were magnanimous in defeat and their team, coaching staff and parents were a real credit to their club and many of them wished us good luck in the next round. I know that this is very much appreciated by our team, coaches and parents. BAC’s boys should be very proud of their performance today as they have stopped our team from winning a game in normal time for the first time this season with a tigerish and tenacious effort. We have come close to defeat today and our boys will have learnt a lot after this game. I’ve got a headache now after all the stress of the game itself and then trying to get an accurate report down on paper. I think a nice cold beer is in order!

Ladybridge Pumas v Lostock Hall Juniors - 2nd Round Cup

This match which was cancelled last week because of a frozen pitch was a contest between two teams who are experiencing vastly different fortunes this season. Pumas unbeaten at the top of the Premier league and Lostock struggling in the B league. It would be important for Pumas to be patient and keep playing controlled passing football. Pumas had a full strength squad available with the exception of Tom and the starting line up saw Tyler and Callum on the bench. After a scrappy first 3 mins Dion made a strong run down the right wing and slotted the ball accurately past the advancing keeper. 1 - 0.

A minute later Robert made a good run down the right wing and crossed for Elliot whose shot was blocked. Then it was Lewis' turn to forage down the right wing testing the keeper with a strong shot. The resulting corner was floated across by Jack onto Ben's head but the ball just went the wrong side of the cross bar. Play now switched to the left wing where Matt beat a couple of defenders before releasing a shot/cross which was well intercepted by the keeper. Another corner for Pumas was headed against the post by Sam, still desperate to break his duck this season. After 10mins a loose ball came to Jack 20 yards out and he hit his shot beautifully over the keeper into the net. 2 - 0.

Lostock were struggling to get out of their own half and on the rare occasions that they did they were met with Pumas formidable back four of Caleb, Lewis, Sam and Matt who were in total control and the wide men in particular were making strong overlapping runs down the wings. One such run by Caleb on the right allowed him to deliver a pin-point accurate cross to Eddie who made no mistake from close range. 3 - 0.

Eddie was in action again soon after with a lovely break through the middle. He released the ball to Dion whose shot was well saved by the busy Lostock keeper. After 22 mins a weak Lostock goal kick was picked up sharply by Tyler and his quick thinking pass to Elliot was rewarded when he picked his spot and coolly beat the keeper. 4 - 0.

Then came a rare Lostock attack which broke down with an off-side flag. Eddie made a great run through the middle to set up a one on one with the keeper who did brilliantly to save his shot but as usual, Elliot was astutely backing up and tapped in the loose ball. 5 - 0.

A bit of a comedy of errors followed with Jack making a forceful run down the left wing. He mis-hit his shot which fortunately came to Elliot in front of a gaping net. He mis-hit his shot which came again to Jack who this time made no mistake and blasted home from 10 yards. 6 - 0.

On 26 mins Pumas won a corner delivered onto Tylers head by Jack for a well-worked set-piece goal. 7 - 0.

Another good corner on the left saw Sam heading narrowly over and then a minute later Eddie made another of his surging breaks through the middle only to see his shot rebound off the keepers lh post. The ball came out to the ever alert Elliot who amazingly also hit the same post! In the final minute of the first half a loose ball found Eddie on the edge of the penalty area from where he took a couple of touches before cleverly lobbing the advancing keeper. Half time 8 - 0.

Despite being completely outclassed in the first half Lostock never stopped trying and their half time team talk obviously motivated them at the start of the second half. They won their first corner which was comfortably cleared to give Jack a chance to break only to see his shot go narrowly wide. Then Lostock were awarded a free kick 35 yards out which was delivered dangerously into the Pumas penalty area for the first time in the match. Conor couldn't gather the loose ball and it was prodded home for Lostock's first score. 8 - 1.

Pumas made no more mistakes and the goals continued to flow with contributions from Eddie, Tyler (2), Dion, Elliot (2), Jack and Matt during the next 20 mins to take the score to 16 - 1.

Sam was frequently joining the forwards in his attempt to get on the score sheet and he looked to have done this but his fierce shot hit the side netting. However, a few seconds later he had another chance when he pounced on a weak goal kick and fired an unstoppable shot past the helpless keeper to receive the well earned congratulations of his team mates. 17 - 1.

At this stage Pumas were attacking in numbers in wave after wave but in their eagerness were frequently being caught off-side which kept handing the initiative back to their opponents. After 57 mins Pumas were awarded their first penalty of the season and Callum was given the responsibility. He scored beautifully by blasting the ball high into the right corner. 18 - 1.

From a throw in by Dion near the lh corner flag Jack picked up the ball and shot home for his first right footed goal of the season! 19 -1.

The final action saw Elliot break down the right and play a great pass to Jack who completed the scoring from 12 yards. 20 - 1.

This was a clinically efficient performance from Pumas with eight different players making the score sheet and no less than four individual hat-tricks. However the difference in class was apparent and we mustn't get too carried away. It was a great credit to Lostock that they kept trying right to the end and it was very thoughtful and kind of their coach at the end to say some very complimentary words to the Pumas team. He especially admired the sportsmanlike way that victory was achieved and so did the 50+ spectators. We're getting to the pointed end of this knock-out comp now and inevitably the games will get progressively tougher. Roll on next week's quarter final against BAC/EE.

Ladybridge Pumas v Hoole United

Mid table Hoole gave us a hard game back in October and Pumas could not afford to relax against this strong, physical side who have a good goal scoring record.

Pumas again had a full squad and the starting line up was:- Conor, Caleb, Callum, Sam, Matt, Eddie, Lewis, Ben, Elliot, Dion and Jack with Robert, Tyler and Tom on the bench.
Hoole started very brightly and a quick attack down the left resulted in Conor having to make a good catch from the cross. Hoole were soon attacking down the other flank and a powerful shot went across the face of the goal. Pumas soon got into their stride and Dion made a good run down the right before crossing to Elliot whose shot went over the bar. Then after 6 mins it was Dion's turn to shoot over after an exchange of passes with Eddie. Pumas were gradually beginning to dominate possession with Callum and Lewis making timely tackles and distributing well. Caleb and Matt on the defensive flanks were alert to the threats of the Hoole wingers and were keen to make attacking runs themselves. Following a scramble on the left the ball was crossed in front of the Hoole goal and Eddie just failed to make contact. Pumas then had two successive corners on the right which Jack delivered with his usual accuracy only to see his second cross hit the bar and bounce out of play for a goal kick. On 16mins following some scrappy midfield play, the ball came to Elliot who cleverly kept possession before feeding the ball to his left where Jack was backing up and cutting in from the left wing. His powerful, accurate shot gave the keeper no chance. 1 - 0.

Almost straight from the kick off Jack returned the favour and crossed to Elliot who couldn't quite get to the ball. Pumas then won another corner on the right and Jack floated it in for Eddie to beat the close attentions of two defenders and head home brilliantly. 2 - 0.

Ben was looking in complete control of the central midfield linking defence and attack skilfully and distributing the ball accurately to his forwards. One such pass gave Dion the opportunity to break down the right but his shot went past the keeper's rh post. Amazingly, Sam still hasn't made the scoresheet this season and again he looked determined to break his duck when he collected the ball 30 yds out and after taking a couple of touches unleashed a powerful shot which was safely gathered by the Hoole keeper. Then, just before half time the action switched to the other end where a well directed Hoole free kick was similarly saved by Conor. Half time 2 - 0.
Robert, Tyler and Tom were brought on for Matt, Eddie and Elliot without Pumas losing their dominance of possession. Within 5 mins Tyler was in action with a smart shot which hit the post and came out. Then, a minute later his pass found Dion in the penalty area with his back to goal. He cleverly laid the ball back to Ben who was backing up and he hit his shot powerfully and accurately into the net. 3 - 0. (This was definitely Ben who I credited with a goal last week which should have been Dion's! Sorry Dion)
Pumas were awarded a free kick about 35 yds out which could have been taken by 3 or 4 Pumas players with the ability to hit good dead balls. In the end it was Lewis who took the kick finding Sam's head glancing it just wide of the mark. After 17 mins a loose ball was pounced on by Jack in the Hoole penalty area and his goal bound shot was blocked on the line with the keeper well beaten. Then a corner from the left gave a heading chance to Dion which went just over the bar. 2 mins later Tyler broke through and unleashed a great shot which the keeper pushed onto the post with a magnificent diving save. After another 3 mins Tyler ran down the right and from a narrow angle again hit the woodwork! A hat-trick of woodwork for Tyler. Elliot had been brought back on and picked up an injury which meant he couldn't continue. With all subs used and about 10 mins remaining, Pumas were down to 10 men. Then came arguably the best goal of the match. Ben brought the ball out of the middle and fed Tyler on the right. Jack sprinted in from the left and met Tyler's accurate cross first time with his left foot for an unstoppable goal.

With their extra man, Hoole were trying to press and Tom was called into action on the left side of defence to make some timely clearances. Robert was struggling to get clean possession down the right wing but showed some deft touches and linked well with the other forwards. With only a couple of minutes left, Pumas nearly lost their precious clean sheet status when a Hoole attack down the right wing produced an accurate cross which was headed over with the net at his mercy. Then in the last minute a good build up in midfield saw Tyler receive the ball just outside the Hoole penalty area. His perfectly weighted through ball was collected by Eddie whose shot beat the keeper's dive to his left. The ball hit the post then bounced across the goal and hit the opposite post before crawling over the line. 5 - 0.

This was a spirited performance by the Pumas to beat a competent Hoole team and keep up their 100% record in the Central Lancs league. To achieve a second consecutive clean sheet was also very satisfying and is a great credit to the defensive line-up. Well done boys!

Tarleton Corinthians v Ladybridge Pumas

Pumas made the long trip to Tarleton on a dreary, cold, snowy Winter afternoon and were able to field a full strength squad with the exception of Tyler whose dad couldn't find the ground. (Tom Toms are good Ralph!). The pitch was in surprisingly good shape considering the poor weather lately. Pumas totally dominated possession and created wave after wave of attacks. Jack opened the scoring within 5 mins with a strong left footed shot. (his right foot's only for standing on). 0 - 1. Tarleton made a rare break down the right and Sam slipped in attempting a tackle but Callum was quick to cover and put the ball out of play. After 20 mins Ben brought the ball out of defence and used his dribbling skills to take it all the way only to be foiled by the keeper. 2 mins later Ben was again in the action following good work by Dion and Jack. His powerful shot could only be parried by the keeper and with true poacher's instinct Elliot was on hand for a simple tap-in goal. 0 - 2.
Then Matt made a good run down the left and played a lovely through ball for Dion to run onto and shoot. His shot was well saved and this time there was no-one on hand to play the loose ball.Pumas made a fast passing move when Robert fed Dion on the right wing and his accurate cross found Tom on the edge of the 6 yds box. He skilfully brought it under control and smashed it past the keeper. 0 - 3.
Immediately from the ko Ben, who was dominating the centre of the pitch, passed to Jack on the left. Jack coolly played a perfectly weighted through ball to Dion who beat the off-side trap and in a one on one with the keeper made no mistake. 0 - 4. Pumas were making sustained and continuous attacks and first Lewis then Sam tried to get on the score sheet to no avail. Eddie was working hard down the left flank and Caleb was overlapping on the right. Then out of nowhere Tarleton broke through the middle and in a one on one Conor stood firm and the forward shot wide. The next Pumas attack saw Eddie make a shot/cross which ricocheted off a defender into the busy keeper's arms. Another Pumas attack had Ben on the edge of the Tarleton penalty area and he unselfishly passed back to Callum who chipped the ball perfectly over the defenders for Eddie to beat his marker and skilfully score a well-worked goal. 0 - 6.
Pumas were playing beautiful passing football and were oozing with confidence and working hard for each other. First Eddie and then Jack had good chances saved then Dion hit a powerful long range shot just inside the keeper's r.h. post. 0 - 7.
Another break from Tarleton after 52 mins saw a long range shot comfortably gathered by Conor for his first and only touch of the game! Poor Conor, he must have been frozen. Another Pumas corner was taken by Jack on the right and the loose ball came out to Caleb about 20 yds out on the right. He delivered a well struck shot which would probably have been saved by the keeper but Elliot played a crafty dummy by stepping over the ball which finished in the back of the net just before the full time whistle. 0 - 8. Full time Tarleton Corinthians 0 Ladybridge Pumas 8 After such a one sided match as this it's difficult to say whether it was Pumas excellence or their opponents failings which were more significant. Certainly Pumas had a lot of determination with good team spirit and showed no weaknesses today. Tarleton showed good individual skills and kept trying to the end but were overpowered by one of Pumas best performances of the season.

Euxton Villa v Ladybridge Pumas 1st round Cup

Pumas first match in the qualifying group of the Central Lancs League was against Euxton Villa and resulted in a convincing victory for the Pumas. However, since that game Villa have been unbeaten and are top of their league so it would be a big mistake to underestimate this team on their steeply sloping bumpy pitch.

Pumas had a full strength squad and the starting line up was Conor, Caleb, Callum, Sam, Lewis, Ben, Matt, Robert, Dion, Tyler, and Jack with Elliot, Tom and Eddie standing by as subs.

Pumas started the game kicking downhill and it would be important to take advantage of this. The first few minutes were scrappy as both sides struggled to string together more than a couple of passes on this heavy, bumpy surface. It soon became apparent that Pumas were the stronger side as they dominated possession. Tyler broke through the centre and saw his shot well saved. A corner from the right was placed by Jack into the heart of the goalmouth and as it was half cleared Caleb was there to hit a signature shot which again tested the keeper. More corners for Pumas followed in quick succession and from the 6th one Jack played the ball short to Matt (playing his first game since his op.) who returned it to Jack whose accurate cross was powerfully headed home by Lewis after 8 mins. 0 - 1
Villa were struggling to get any meaningful possession in Pumas half and the occasional breakaways were dealt with comfortably by Sam, Callum and Caleb who looked rock solid. After 17 mins a rare Villa attack was broken up by Callum assisted by Caleb who hit a long ball downfield where Dion used his speed to beat a defender to the ball before coolly taking it round the advancing keeper and tapping into an empty net. 0 - 2
From the kick off Pumas gained possession and immediately went on the attack again with several players combining in a great move culminating in Tyler turning beautifully just inside the area and firing home an unstoppable shot. 0 - 3
Jack was rampant down the left wing with support from Matt, creating some great openings but the Villa defence were beginning to look better organised and were covering well. Robert was also showing his dribbling skills on the other wing. Ben and Lewis were looking strong and linked well between defence and attack without being given time to settle on the ball. After 21 mins Villa attacked down the right flank and the winger managed to get his cross in to the waiting forward who hit it first time past Conor as he came out. This was Conor's first touch of the ball as he picked it out of the net! 1 - 3
The remainder of the half saw some end to end stuff with several more chances falling to Pumas, the most notable being a powerful shot by Sam just wide and a good effort from Robert which was bravely blocked just before the whistle.

All three subs were brought on and Robert, Matt and Tyler were given a rest.
It was to be expected that Villa would come out with all guns firing in the 2nd half with the advantage of the slope but that didn't happen and Pumas continued to enjoy the majority of the ball. It helped their passing game that the ball wasn't running away from them and they rarely looked in trouble. Several promising attacks were made and Dion took a quick short corner to Jack whose great cross was met by Lewis who blasted over the bar from 6 yards. Tom made a good run down the left and fed the ball to Ben who slipped the ball deftly past the keeper's left hand only to see it hit the post and bounce into the keeper's welcome arms. After 45mins Villa made a dangerous looking break down the left from which a cross cum shot was fingertip saved by Conor who had quickly come off his line. The loose ball was safely put out of play by Sam and the resultant corner was weakly played behind making Jack's corners look even better. A quick break by Pumas gave Jack what seemed to be a golden chance but he was surprisingly ruled off-side. Then Villa broke and a dangerous looking situation was dealt with by Conor rushing 30 yards out to kick the ball into touch. Sam looks hungry to bag his first goal of the season and he made a fantastic solo dribbling run, beating several defenders before shooting agonisingly just wide. Villa's goal kick was weak as they tired and Dion collected the ball before cleverly passing to Eddie whose shot from 8 yards beat the keeper's right hand on 50 mins. 1 - 4
Pumas still had most of the ball and a good move down the right involving several players saw the ball come to Elliot whose snap shot hit the post and bounced to safety. As the clock ticked down a goalmouth scramble resulted in a chance for Eddie who tested the keeper again.

This was a solid workmanlike performance from the Pumas who did what was necessary to achieve this result against a team who have had a long unbeaten run and on a pitch which made good football difficult.

Bamber Bridge Blues v Ladybridge Pumas

It has been six weeks since the Pumas last had a competitive game and what a game to come back to. This was a top of the league clash with the two unbeaten teams in the league facing each other for the first time this season. It was Pumas’ first visit to the Bamber Bridge ground and what a marvellous facility they have to ply their trade on. This was a game that both teams and their respective supporters were looking forward to.
The Pumas had a full squad to pick from and started the game with Matt, Eddie and Tyler on the bench. The game kicked off in cool, dark, dank conditions with the pitch quite heavy underfoot due to the awful weather that has plagued the NW since before Christmas. A bright opening by both teams with some good early possession for the Pumas saw our first meaningful attack which involved Robert linking up well with Ben who fed Dion through towards the Bamber Bridge goal, unfortunately this move was broken up well by the Bamber Bridge defence before Dion could test their keeper. Bamber Bridge were moving the ball well through their midfield and they also had a chance on goal that just went wide past Conor’s right hand post. The teams looked evenly matched through the first ten minutes of the game but the deadlock was to be broken by a superb individual effort from Dion who ran onto a through ball 30 yards out to make no mistake as he slotted a great shot past the Bamber Bridge keeper. 0-1.

Bamber Bridge enjoyed the majority of possession and territory in the next ten minutes of the game, in pursuit of an equalizer and a couple of corners for them certainly tested the Pumas defence to the full. Dion though was looking lively up front with Elliot, and Dion was unlucky not to find his strike partner after two penetrating runs down the right. The Pumas midfield was being driven well by Ben and Lewis working hard and tackling well in testing conditions. The pivotal move of the first half happened after 25 mins of play. Dion picked up the ball on the right and ran a full 50 yards up the pitch withstanding great pressure from a pursuing Bamber Bridge defender to again slot a shot past the Bamber Bridge keeper for his 2nd goal of the game. 0-2.

It was important that the Pumas kept hold of this lead into the half time break which they managed to do through some good, tight defence, marshalled well by Tom and Sam respectively.

Robert and Elliot were replaced by Eddie and Tyler at the beginning of the second half. Wayne and Karl impressed on the lads at half time that a determined second half effort by Bamber Bridge was to be expected and protecting the lead was paramount and the lads responded to this request superbly. The first ten minutes of the half were indeed tough for the Pumas as the Bamber Bridge team pushed forward to try and force a goal. However, solid and determined work by the Pumas defensive quartet kept this expected Bamber Bridge effort out. The Bamber Bridge No 2 was at the heart of all the good work for the Bamber Bridge team during this period as he proved time and time again to be a very technically gifted player. The first real effort of the half for the Pumas fell to Tyler in the Bamber Bridge box - unfortunately he couldn’t quite get the ball from under his feet to test the Bamber Bridge keeper. This half of the game was punctuated with some brilliant defensive play by both teams with hard but fair tackling by both defensive units with Sam, Tom and Lewis to the fore for the Pumas. The last ten minutes of the game saw some good play down the flanks by a busy Jack and an industrious Eddie but the scoresheet wasn’t to be added to by either team before the final whistle.

A very tough and competitive game played in the right spirit by a couple of determined and skilful teams battling against the conditions as much as against each other. The difference between the teams in the end was probably down to our top scorer’s ability to take the chances on goal when they were presented to him in the first half. A determined second half defensive effort by all the Pumas players ensured that the hard fought for first half lead was preserved. After a six week break and just two training sessions in this time I thought the boys did extremely well against an unbeaten team at an unfamiliar ground.

Following our hard fought narrow victory at home against early season front runners BAC both clubs were licking their lips in eager anticipation of this return match. Conditions were perfect on a crisp, cold, calm morning with the game being played on a large flat pitch.

Pumas lined up with Conor, Caleb, Callum, Sam, Lewis, Ben, Jack, Tom, Robert, Dion and Elliot. Eddie was on the bench together with Tyler who was unlikely to be able to be called on because of a painful knee problem.
Pumas kicked off and were immediately on the attack, winning a couple of challenges. The ball was cleared out of BAC's penalty area to Elliot on the edge of the area. He spotted the BAC keeper off his line and hit the ball first time into the top of the net for what must rank as the quickest goal of the season after only 25 seconds! Very quick thinking and a great opportunist goal. 0 - 1.
This early goal allowed the Pumas to settle into a nice rhythm and they enjoyed a high percentage of possession for the next ten minutes looking especially strong down the left. BAC's defence and especially their keeper were working hard to keep the Pumas forwards at bay and Conor only got his first touch of the ball after 11 mins. Ben and Lewis were feeding some lovely through balls for Dion to run on to and he used his pace to good effect to create several one on one situations with their keeper who was up to the job every time, coming off his line quickly and bravely to smother the attempts. Jack and Elliot were backing up well ready to pounce on any fumbles which never came.
Robert was looking increasingly confident down the right wing and was beating defenders consistently with his dribbling skills. He made a lovely cross which was skilfully cut out by the keeper when it looked like Jack would have an open goal at his mercy. All of this possession and attacking meant that the game was being played in BAC's half of the pitch with the result that Pumas could be vulnerable to a long ball down the middle. Sam and Caleb were alert to this kind of danger and dealt with these situations with coolness and skill. Tom was also called on and made some timely powerful clearances.
Pumas won several corners on the right over the course of a few minutes and each time Jack delivered the ball right into the heart of the 6 yard box but on each occasion no Pumas forward could get a boot or head on the ball and each time BAC were able to scramble the ball clear. From one such clearance after 22 mins the ball was booted upfield for Conor to be faced with a one on one which he dealt with very competently having had little action. Another Pumas corner led to a goalmouth scramble which looked certain to result in a goal till the ball was hooked over the bar from short range. Just before half time a snap shot by BAC from 30 yards out on the left tested Conor's alertness and he saved well.

With Eddie starting for Robert the second half started as the first had ended with a breakaway by BAC again testing Conor. A scrappy period followed with Pumas struggling to keep possession or create any significant chances. After 36 mins a half clearance by Pumas defence came to a BAC player fully 35 yards from goal. He punted it straight back with great power and the ball flew over the crowded penalty area and Conor's outstretched arms for a shock goal completely against the run of play. 1 - 1
This set-back seemed to put more determination into the Pumas play as they continued to dominate their opponents. Ben was a powerhouse in mid-field breaking up attacks and creating attacking raids. Dion's speed and control were causing havoc and he and Elliot combined well after 43 mins to set up a chance which Elliot took by coolly sliding the ball past the BAC keeper with the outside of his boot. 1 - 2
Further chances fell to both sides as BAC tried to step up their efforts for an equaliser. Scrappy play at the edge of the Pumas area saw the final shot going just over the bar and then both Lewis and Ben had long range shots. A dangerous BAC break down the left was broken up by a brilliantly timed tackle from Sam who had been alert to the danger and had come all across the pitch to deal with the threat. Good defensive work by Callum released Eddie on a run down the right with Elliot in support looked promising until good BAC defending broke the move. BAC's dangerous looking No 11 made a great run down the left and as Conor came out to cut his angle down he slid the ball across the face of the goal but none of his forwards were backing up for what would have been a simple tap-in. The remainder of the game was played in BAC's half with Dion creating another couple of one on ones with their keeper who again excelled.

This was an outstanding result for Pumas considering the absence of Tyler and Matt against a well organised BAC team who had high expectations before the game. The scoreline flattered BAC whose keeper had an outstanding game foiling Dion on at least five occasions when he looked certain to score. Pumas also failed to capitalise on the excellence of Jack's corner taking when two or more goals could easily have resulted from his dangerous deliveries.

Once again there were no reporters available for this home fixture. With the league leaders, Bamber Bridge, match postponed, it was an opportunity for the Pumas to go top of the league if they could win by more than 4 goals - a big ask, but with the Pumas recent performances, not impossible.

We didn't have to wait long for the Pumas first goal from Robert. The ball was bouncing and bobbling more than usual and the boys were struggling to keep hold of the ball. Further goals from Lewis and Elliot took the score to 3-0 when the half time whistle blew.

The second half opened with a quick goal from Dion, followed 10 minutes later by 2nd goals from both Robert and Elliot to take the score to 6-0. PST managed to break away and have their first real shot at goal which went high out of Conor's reach into the back of the net to make it 6-1. A further 2 goals from Elliot and a well earned goal from Jack took the score to 9-1 when the final whistle blew. The Pumas had many other chances to score during the game which the PST goalkeeper did well to save.

A great result from the Pumas to put them top of the league for the first time - well done boys!

A couple of cracking goals from the Pumas in the first half with Jack scoring the first and Tyler the 2nd. Many more chances from both teams in the first half with good defending and good keeper skills from both sides. The second half was end to end football and another goal from Dion late on, took the score to 3-0 and it looked like a clean sheet for the Pumas until the last kick of the ball, well into injury time, beat Conor for the final score of 3-1.

This was the most eagerly awaited game so far this season between the two undefeated table-toppers. Could Pumas' solid defence (4 goals conceded in 3 games) hold out against BAC's prolific attack (21 goals scored in 3 games)? A good crowd turned out on a cold autumn morning to watch this intriguing encounter.
Pumas had a full strength squad with Tyler back from injury and the starting line up was:- Conor, Caleb, Matt, Callum, Sam, Ben, Lewis, Robert, Jack, Dion and Tyler. Eddie, Tom and Elliot were on the bench at the start.
The first half started with Pumas playing up the slight slope and the early exchanges were a bit scrappy. Ben looked dominant in mid-field and after 4mins he fed a lovely ball through to Robert on the right wing which BAC's defence did well to smother. Then Robert and Dion combined well on the right flank to force a corner taken expertly by Jack who has the ability to put the ball in the danger zone every time. After 6mins Dion was released by a great through ball from Lewis and he used his pace to beat the challenging defender but his shot went just wide. BAC weren't able to put any meaningful attacks together until after 8mins they broke down the left and the cross bounced dangerously in the Pumas penalty area and Sam had to be alert to block a powerful shot. Then seconds later BAC attacked again, this time down the right and a powerful low shot found the corner of Conor's net. 0-1.
Pumas responded positively to this set-back and played with great determination, winning most of the 50/50 challenges and working hard in every position. Tyler put pressure on BAC in their own area and skilfully set up a chance for Jack who coolly found the net after 10mins. 1-1.
Matt was busy on the left side of the pitch and was called into action to make a goal-line clearance following a BAC free kick from near the centre line. After 15mins Ben won the ball in mid-field and slotted a beautifully weighted through ball to Dion whose speed again beat the defence but the final shot was a carbon copy of his earlier attempt and went the wrong side of the post. BAC won a corner on the right which was delivered into the danger area but good work by Callum gave Matt the chance to run down the left wing and show his skills. Tyler was giving the BAC defenders a hard time and they couldn't deal with his speed and dribbling skills. After 21mins he kept possession on the BAC goal line and delivered a great pass from the left to Dion who prodded the ball home gratefully. 2-1.
Pumas were looking good at this point and were just about edging possession but BAC looked dangerous on the break and Caleb and Sam in particular had to defend desperately at times. One such break by BAC resulted in a powerful shot going just wide after 24mins and then 2mins later we saw a moment of sublime skill from a BAC forward when he took the ball on the edge of the Pumas area and in one fluid movement turned, controlled the ball and smashed it past Conor's diving fingertips. 2-2.
The final action of the first half saw Robert release Dion down the right from where, under great pressure he managed to get the ball to Tyler on the penalty spot but the defenders closed him down before he could shoot. HT 2-2.

In the second half Pumas had the advantage of the slight downhill slope and right from the kick off they played the best football of the game. Their passing and movement off the ball were excellent with the whole team contributing and working hard. This paid off after only 2mins when Robert kept possession on the right wing before turning the ball inside to Dion whose long range, high looping shot gave the keeper no chance. 3-2.
After 6mins the ball broke from the right to find Jack in space but his shot went just wide. Lewis was catching the eye with some solid work in mid-field and Sam was heavily involved, breaking up attack after attack with his trademark beautifully timed tackles and powerful heading ability. Callum and Ben were also heavily involved and were effectively controlling midfield. After 11mins Dion bravely went for a 50/50 ball and picked up a painful shin injury which meant he couldn't continue. This prompted a spurt of changes with Elliot, Tom and Eddie coming on for Dion, Matt and Robert. This could have upset Pumas rhythm but in fact they continued just as before with Jack especially rising to the occasion. He was like a terrier and his work rate and energy helped to set up several chances for himself and others.
Eddie and Elliot were also combining well down the right and forced a good save from the BAC keeper. Tom was looking comfortable at left back and after breaking up a potentially dangerous attack he fed Tyler with a good through ball which the BAC keeper had to be quick to smother. He was again called into action when Jack, having won two challenges, gave the ball to Tyler on the edge of the area. Eddie made a good run down the right and passed to Jack who crossed superbly for Elliot to head just wide. Then after 27mins Elliot reciprocated and delivered a lovely cross to Jack who saw his shot go agonisingly over the bar. With the clock ticking down to full time Pumas won three successive corners on the right each one delivered perfectly by Jack and keeping the BAC's backs under pressure. The final corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble ending in a goal kick.

The game lived up to the hype and was a great advertisement for junior football. Players on both teams showed skill, speed, courage, fitness and commitment and can be proud of their conduct. I imagine that BAC will be itching to play us at their place and unfortunately we remain in 2nd place due to Bamber Bridge's superior goal difference. This was Pumas first home game in the Premier League campaign and will be followed by several more consecutive home league fixtures. If the boys continue to work hard for each other like they did today it's hard to see anyone stopping them. Well done Pumas.

Hoole United v Ladybridge Pumas

This match against Hoole United was our third successive away fixture since the start of our Premier League campaign. A blustery day saw the lads play on a very uneven surface which made playing conditions extremely tricky for the Pumas who are used to better pitches. The Pumas starting line up was Conor, Caleb, Matt, Callum, Sam, Ben, Lewis, Robert, Jack, Dion and Eddie with Elliot on the bench. Tyler was injured and Tom was away on holiday. A bright start saw a couple of early efforts from Caleb and Robert from distance, test their keeper in the first five minutes. Hoole seemed very comfortable with the surface and coped better with the uneven bounce. Ben made a great run down the right and was unfortunate that his ball across their area was cut out well by the Hoole defence. Jack was operating down the left and was looking particularly dangerous going forward making a couple of great runs and tested the keeper with shots on both occasions. Robert was looking lively and was unlucky with a good shot saved well by their keeper on 5 minutes. Jack was like a terrier up front and was being ably assisted by his strike partner Dion whose pace was causing the Hoole defenders all sorts of problems. Hoole’s first attack of the game came after 15mins with a shot just going wide of Conor’s left hand post. Puma’s dominance territorially would surely force a goal and further efforts from Lewis, Jack and Dion kept their keeper busy. A substitution after twenty minutes saw Elliot on for Eddie and it would be a pass from Elliot that created the goal as he found Jack in space out on the right and from 15 yards out he smashed a left footed effort past their keeper for a well deserved goal. 0-1. The Pumas seemed to relax a little after the goal and their passing game started to improve. However, Hoole came forward on a couple of breaks that were effectively dealt with by Callum and Sam. Dion and Jack were looking hungry up front for another goal and a superb cross by Dion to Jack was parried well by their keeper for a corner which unfortunately didn’t come to anything. Pumas really dominated the last 10 minutes of the half with Robert and Callum looking impressive. Pumas forced another corner on 25mins which was taken by Jack which found Ben ten yards out, unfortunately his header just went over the bar. The pressure was building in the last 5 minutes of the half and the Pumas were finally rewarded with a goal when a great run and pass from a gazelle like Dion found Robert in space and he duly finished it off to make it 0-2. Matt made a fantastic run into the Hoole area with a minute of the half left but his shot was blocked bravely by a Hoole defender who was injured in the tackle. Half Time 0-2.
The first couple of minutes of the 2nd half started as the 1st ended with the Pumas dominating possession and territory. A corner taken by Jack found Elliot whose shot just went wide. However Hoole would enjoy their best spell of the match for the next 20 minutes and smart work by Sam and Caleb at the back in the early part of this period kept Hoole at bay but they threatened more as this period progressed. Dion was really unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet after a clever run and shot just went wide. Hoole pressure was still building and unfortunately Conor would have to wait a little longer for a clean sheet as Hoole scored after 45mins. The Pumas defence were unable to clear from a fairly innocuous attack. 1-2. The Pumas defence were sitting very deep and seemed to be inviting the Hoole attack on, Hoole couldn’t believe their luck. Constant pressure was eventually relieved by a fantastic darting run forward by Ben, whose snapshot went just wide. Hoole nearly drew level after 50mins when another attack ended in a shot that hit Conor’s crossbar. Pumas were really living on the edge and a goal for either team would be crucial at this stage of the match and Hoole looked more likely to get it until out of nowhere a clearance out of the Pumas defence found Jack who raced forward with just the keeper to beat. The keeper rushed out of his area and tried to push Jack off the ball, but Jack was far too smart and he swept past a despairing keeper to fire home a left footed shot into an empty net for his 2nd - superb stuff Jack. 1-3. The tide definitely turned after this goal and Robert made the game safe with a shot/cross which fooled the Hoole keeper into thinking it was going wide- wrong, it found the back of the net 1-4. The Pumas needed the 3 goal cushion as Hoole forced three late corners with minutes to go, fortunately the defence were able to cope and no damage was done. Sam ended the match with a powerful 80 yard run out of defence that typifies his determined character, unfortunately a defender eventually stopped him. I’m sure he’ll get a goal that his all round play deserves, sometime soon. The ref blew for full time shortly after Sam’s run for another away day win. Final Score 1-4.Three games played and three wins for the Pumas. A simple statement of fact but considering that all these games have been played against new opposition, away from home, it is a real achievement for the team so early in the season. Today’s game has been the most satisfying win I believe as we were pushed very hard for most of the 2nd Half when we only had a slender 1 goal advantage. Our defence looked in trouble on numerous occasions and the game could have ended a draw. Our players showed real character to have come through this period of pressure and score a couple of quick goals to kill off the opposition. Our first home game next Sunday is against the early pacesetters in the league BAC/EE, another unbeaten team that were above us only on goal difference before the start of the fixtures today.

Longridge Town v Ladybridge Pumas

Our 2nd away fixture in the Premier League was against Longridge Town. The game was played in calm bright conditions on a lush playing surface. The starting line up was Conor, Caleb, Tom, Matt, Sam, Ben, Robert, Lewis, Dion, Jack and Tyler with Elliot and Eddie on the bench. Callum was away.
A quick opening by the Pumas seemed to take LT by surprise and an effort within a minute by Dion went just wide. An opportunity then presented itself to Tyler shortly afterwards and he unleashed a fantastic shot which their keeper had no chance with 0-1.
This early goal seemed to help the lads relax and the tempo of the game was dictated by the Pumas with good early runs by Robert and Jack who combined well to create a number of openings. One of these resulted in a vicious corner taken by Jack which caused the LT defence major problems. LT occasionally ventured out of their half only to be thwarted by an industrious Sam at the back who was right on his game in the early stages. A great passage of play by the Pumas saw Jack direct a great header into the net only for it to be chalked off for an offside decision. Caleb made a rare trip out of defence to direct a shot towards goal which their keeper dealt with well. The Pumas defence looked very solid throughout the half and dealt with rare attacks from the LT forwards with ease. The 2nd Pumas goal was a real team effort with a smart pass from Caleb finding Dion who threaded an inch perfect ball through to Jack who finished the move with a clinical strike past their keeper 0-2.
Another fantastic move by the Pumas saw another effort by Jack hit the back of the net but this was disallowed for offside. Tyler was operating well out on the left wing and out of nowhere he unleashed a ferocious shot which would have beaten any keeper at this level to make it 0-3.
Pumas where in cruise control at this stage with Lewis commanding the centre of the midfield and a great through ball by him to Dion saw him make no mistake with just the keeper to beat 0-4.
Pumas at this juncture must have thought that this would be the half time score but a smart attack by LT saw a cross/shot beat Conor all ends up 1-4.
Apart from this goal the Pumas first half performance was easily the best we’ve seen this season with Sam seeming to head every ball and Jack scrapping for anything loose in the box.

Robert and Tyler made way for Eddie and Elliot at the start of the 2nd half but this did not disrupt the Pumas game or dominance at all. Dion had an early effort disallowed for offside after a couple of minutes and the attacks kept coming with Tom and Dion linking up well to cause the LT defence all sorts of problems. Pumas defensive quartet were operating really well with Tom looking assured, Sam tackling and heading with gusto, Caleb’s positioning was a joy to behold and Matt looked comfortable in any defensive situation. The midfield was not to be outdone and a great move involving Captain fantastic Ben and Lewis saw Lewis shoot just wide. The passing at times was an absolute joy to watch and a move started by Tom found Dion in space and his inch perfect cross was met by Jack to claim his 2nd goal of the game 1-5.
Dion worked tirelessly up front and was substituted after 45 mins for a deserved rest to allow Tyler back on. A rare foray into the LT half by Matt saw him unleash an excellent effort from 30 yards which just went wide of the right hand post. Elliot and Eddie looked very comfortable in their respective positions and the team were keeping up the pressure and dominating possession and territory throughout the half. Our final goal of the game was scored by Matt who was fed a ball 30 yards out by Lewis and unlike his earlier effort which went wide, this thunderbolt went high and right of their keeper 1-6.
A couple of personnel changes saw Rob and Dion back on for the rest of the game. Tyler and Dion had opportunities late in the half to add to their tally but good goalkeeping kept these efforts out. LT never gave up and provided a sterner test than the scoreline suggests and they grabbed a late consolation goal after a weak right footed clearance from Conor ended up with an LT player placing the ball past him to make it a final score of 2-6.

The Pumas performance today was excellent and a real pleasure for all their supporters to watch and will certainly make a few teams in the league sit up and notice us. Well done boys. A special mention must also go out to the coaching team of Wayne and Karl whose enthusiasm and commitment to getting the boys to play the game in the right spirit and treat the opposition and referee with respect is to be commended.

Penwortham St Teresas Blues v Ladybridge Pumas

The opening fixture of the Premier League campaign saw Pumas drawn away to a very competent Penwortham team. We've watched Pumas develop over the past three years into a very capable side but could they cut it at this level? This was a bench-mark test which would tell us a lot about the relative strengths and weaknesses of the team at this new level.

With the exception of top goal scorer Elliot, who was unable to play, Pumas had a full strength squad and the initial line up was:- Conor (1) Caleb (4) Callum (15) Sam (2) Matt (5) Lewis (12) Ben (8) Tyler (14) Dion (9) Jack (11) and Eddie (3) with Robert (6) and Tom (7) ready to come on as subs.

The first 5 minutes saw Pumas dominating possession with Tyler, Lewis and Caleb all having shots at goal which the Blues keeper handled very well. The play was a bit scrappy and Pumas were not looking as fluent as usual even though they were winning all of the individual tussles. The Blues first attack came after 5mins with Conor dealing comfortably with their effort. Jack was put through on his own but the Blues' keeper came quickly off his line to save bravely. Then it was Eddie's turn again when the ball broke to him after a scramble and his shot went narrowly wide of the RH post. After 9mins Ben and Callum combined well before Callum set up another Pumas attack finished by Jack shooting over the bar. Sam was looking in full control of the Blues right wing and was timing his tackles to perfection. Matt was also prominent and was linking play together well down the left side of the pitch.
A minute later Tyler made a strong run down the right wing and delivered a good cross forcing a Blues defender to head towards his own goal which their keeper managed to save. Pumas were so dominant that there was a danger of being caught by a counter-attack and Caleb had to be quick to track back to deal with such a break. Ben was powerful in midfield winning every 50/50 ball as usual and he slipped a lovely pass to Lewis after 13mins. Lewis controlled the ball well and fed a perfect through ball to Dion who finished the move with clinical precision. 0 - 1.
Soon after Matt fed Jack who worked the ball down the left and produced a great cross for Eddie to force another good save from the Blues keeper who was keeping his side in the game. After 16mins Ben and Lewis combined in the middle before releasing a perfectly timed through ball to Dion which beat the off-side trap. Unfortunately with only the keeper to beat from 8 yards the ball 'bobbled' just as he shot and the ball went harmlessly wide. The next few minutes were a bit scrappy again and Caleb had to be sharp to deal with another Blues break and then Tyler made a good run down the right wing crossing for Eddie to make no mistake this time from short range only for his effort to be judged to have been off-side!
Tom came on for Eddie and after 22mins came the most controversial incident in the match. The Blues made a rare attack and following a bit of a scramble in the Pumas penalty area Blues hit a shot which hit the bar and came out and immediately shot again which hit the post. It seemed a fortunate escape for the Pumas but the Ref, from a position inside the centre circle and without a linesman on that side ruled that the ball had crossed the line and awarded a goal to the Blues!! 1 - 1.
After 26mins Tyler made a great run down the right wing using his skill and strength to beat 3 defenders before shooting just wide. Then Callum did some great defensive work making a last ditch tackle to break up a rare dangerous Blues attack just before half time.

The second half started with Robert coming on for Tyler and Pumas now had the advantage of a slight slope and a light breeze. It quickly became apparent that this made a big difference to the Blues' ability to clear the ball out of defence giving Pumas more attacking opportunities. Caleb, Robert and Dion combined well on the right but the final cross was miss-hit for a goal kick. Another controversial incident happened after 6mins when a Pumas attack down the right was flagged for off-side by the linesman which the ref either didn't see or chose to ignore. From the resultant scramble the ball came loose to Robert just inside the box and he coolly beat the keeper with a quick shot. 1 - 2.
Pumas were dominant without really threatening to increase their lead and with only a one goal advantage they had to be careful of being caught on the break. Lewis came forward several times and had powerful long range shots which either went wide of the target or were dealt with easily by the keeper. Robert showed good dribbling skills before setting up a shooting chance for Ben whose shot was also comfortably saved. After 17mins came a rare shot from the Blues, confidently saved by Conor who had not had a lot to do. Then he was in the thick of it as Blues won their first corner on the left which brought Conor into action a few more times. Jack, Eddie and Tyler were working well together and after 22mins Tyler crashed a beauty against the bar and Blues were glad to scramble the ball clear. 3mins later Tyler was again on the attack with a goal bound effort headed away for a corner which was taken on the right by Robert from which Tom shot just wide. Another corner on the right was taken this time by Tyler and Tom, Jack and Eddie were queuing up to knock it in but it just wouldn't fall right for them.
A minute later a quick throw was nudged on to Tyler who controlled it well near the penalty spot before beating the keeper with a fine shot. 1 - 3.

This relieved the pressure on Pumas who looked more relaxed as full time approached. Robert made a good run down the right and delivered a perfect cross for Eddie to slot it home skilfully only to be denied by the off-side flag for the second time.

Pumas safely negotiated a potentially tricky debut in the Premier Division. This wasn't their most fluent performance and the lads were probably understandably a bit nervous with the big build up to this game and the weight of expectation on their shoulders. However, a win's a win and this is a great start to the season proper. Hopefully the lads can now relax and enjoy their football in this league in front of their ever growing band of supporters.

This was the Pumas final match in the mini leagues to decide which league they would be playing in for the rest of the season. A win would surely seal a place in the Premier League, after two convincing wins against Euxton Villa & Brinscall Village.
Both teams arrived for the 11am kick off to an immaculately prepared pitch in perfect weather conditions. The Pumas lined up in a 4 - 2 - 4 formation with Conor (1), Caleb (4), Callum (15), Sam (2), Matthew (5), Lewis (12), Ben (8), Robert (6), Dion (9), Tom (10) and Tyler (14). Subs Eddie & Elliot
The game started off well for the Pumas with excellent early pressure which resulted in a shot at goal from Tyler, followed soon after by a corner taken by Robert which fell to Caleb’s feet whose shot hit the post. Pumas forced another corner shortly after, taken again by Robert, which was headed wide by Sam. Dion was looking sharp and troubled the defence on numerous occasions during these early exchanges. Charnock Richard’s first foray into the Pumas half ended in a shot wide after 5 mins. The next passage of play saw Dion make a great pass to Tom whose shot was saved brilliantly by their keeper. Another penetrating run and shot by Dion tested their keeper who made another sharp save. Pumas were dominating possession and territory at this stage with their best effort a cracking shot from Tyler which crashed against the crossbar. A corner by the Pumas after 9mins resulted in a goalmouth scramble which was somehow kept out by their keeper. The Pumas defence was dealing effectively with the few attacks Charnock mounted with Callum looking very assured at the back. After 10mins a good clearance from Conor resulted in Dion running through and shooting against the post, surely the Pumas would break the deadlock soon. Sam was as industrious as ever and was trying to get forward as often as possible without forgetting his defensive duties. Matt snuffed out another attack from the visitors and from a resulting throw in he found Dion who ran powerfully through the defence to slot a goal home off the inside of the post for a richly deserved goal. 1-0.
This opening goal seemed to relieve the pressure on the Pumas offensive efforts and two further goals from Tom and Lewis put the Pumas into a comfortable 3-o lead.
Shots from Matt and Tyler from distance were again saved well by the impressive Charnock keeper who was by far the busiest man on the pitch. Ben was marshalling the boys well in the centre of the field and was trying to cover every blade of grass as usual. A good clearance kick from Conor found a tireless Dion who ran the ball into the area and his shot found the top of the net out of the reach of their keeper. 4-0
More great pressure from the Pumas saw Matt pass to Dion who hit the crossbar, fortunately the rebound found Tyler in space who made no mistake from 5 yards out. 5-0.
Just before the end of the half a great through-ball from Robert found Dion whose attempt at goal on his weaker left foot went wide of the mark. The half closed with another smart move started by a mazy run by Tom who passed to Caleb who shot just wide from distance. Half time 5-0.
Substitutions at half time saw Elliot on for Dion and Eddie on for Robert. Another great start from the Pumas saw more excellent efforts on goal with Tom unlucky to be caught offside after finishing well. A good run and a shot from Tyler went just wide followed closely by a couple of shots from Elliot which failed to hit the target. An excellent move on the halfway line started with a pass from Sam onto Matt who found Eddie who crossed into their area for Tyler to shoot narrowly wide. Eddie looked busy and was certainly making an impact out on the right wing. A corner after 38mins from Tom found Ben in space, his shot going just over the crossbar. A further substitution took Tom off and Robert on, switching Eddie to the left and Robert to the right. After 42mins a beautiful passing move that involved Lewis and Matt linking up well for a final ball into Eddie whose fierce shot went in just under the crossbar 6-0
Substitution 45mins Dion on for Tyler. Charnock Richard battled hard in all areas of the pitch and enjoyed their best period of play in the next five minutes and a good low shot from their forward went through Conor’s legs for their only goal. 6-1. No clean sheet for the “Cat” this week!
The rest of the game was pretty much played in Charnock Richards half with their keeper pulling off some fantastic saves from Matt, Eddie, Elliot, Ben and Dion. Tom came on for Callum in our final substitution. In the final few minutes a penetrating run and powerful shot by Lewis was only pushed out by their keeper to Dion who popped it in for his hatrick. 7-1

Another satisfying win for the Pumas against a plucky Charnock Richard side that never gave up. This was epitomised by their keeper’s outstanding play that kept the Pumas score in single figures.
The new league will start on 27th September and the new league will be published here as soon as we know.

Ladybridge Pumas v Brinscall Village

The pitch was in pristine condition on a bright and breezy Autumn day for Pumas first home fixture in the Central Lancs League. The starting line up was Conor (1), Caleb (4), Callum (15), Sam (2), Matthew (5), Lewis (12), Ben (8), Robert (6), Dion (9), Jack (11) and Tyler (14). They lined up in a 4 - 2 - 4 formation with Ben and Lewis in mid-field.

After an untidy first few minutes Pumas settled down and started to string their passes together and Tyler looked especially dangerous with his strength, skill and speed down the left flank. He released a lovely pass for Dion who was narrowly offside. After 4 mins Dion ran onto another fine through ball but was injured in a clash with the defender as they both challenged for the ball which ricocheted to the keeper. Robert and Dion exchanged passes down the right wing before forcing a good save from the Brinscall keeper. A high clearance was headed cleverly by Ben to Jack who controlled the ball expertly before feeding a good pass to Dion whose shot skimmed over the bar.
It was all Pumas until suddenly Brinscall broke rapidly down the left in numbers forcing Conor to come quickly off his line and Caleb had to put the ball out for a corner to relieve the pressure with the defence spread-eagled. After 10 mins came the best move of the match so far with Pumas midfield and forwards combining well to put tremendous pressure on Brinscall but the ball came clear to set up another Brinscall counter attack which was brilliantly broken up by Sam who fed a perfectly weighted pass to Jack who in turn set up Dion for yet another goal attempt which went just over. A minute later Jack gained possession again to the left of midfield and played the most beautiful pass inside the defender to Dion threatening on the right flank. He cut inside and his shot gave the keeper no chance. 1 - 0.
Pumas were dominating possession with Brinscall restricted to the occasional breakaways which were comfortably dealt with by Caleb and Sam with Callum getting into the game more and more. Matthew was also prominently involved in supporting attacks down the left. Tyler and Dion both had near misses then Jack made a brilliant dribbling run through midfield before releasing a superb through ball which unfortunately caught three Pumas forwards off-side! After 17 mins Tyler found himself in possession on the edge of the penalty area with three defenders in attendance. He powerfully shrugged off several challenges before beating the keeper from short range. 2 - 0.
After 20 mins Eddie and Tom came on for Tyler and Robert. Another dangerous break from Brinscall was snuffed out by a perfectly timed tackle from Sam on the penalty spot. Top goal scorer Elliot was brought on for Dion who had been working very hard. Another good attack from Brinscall was broken up by Caleb who was looking in full control and distributing the ball intelligently. Matthew had a good run down the left and produced a great cross into the area which frustratingly was missed by everyone when a goal looked certain. Then it was Lewis' turn to impress with good work in midfield to set up a lovely passing move involving Matthew and Tom whose shot went narrowly wide of the target. Eddie also showed good dribbling skills down the right forcing a corner which Jack delivered into the danger area. Following another Brinscall break Pumas were awarded a free kick on the half way line which Sam took feeding Matthew on the left who delivered an inch perfect cross with Pumas forwards queuing up to score but the keeper managed to bravely claim the ball. The resultant clearance came straight to Jack whose quick-thinking shot forced a good save from the keeper. Half time 2 - 0.

On the resumption Pumas were quickly on the attack again with Caleb and Elliot linking well to force a corner which Jack again delivered perfectly into the danger zone. The high partial clearance came out to Sam pressing forward with great confidence but his header was well blocked. A scrappy period lasted for a few minutes with neither side able to string together a few passes but normal service was resumed when Jack broke down the left. Sam was also working hard and looked keen to get on the scoresheet with two shots in quick succession. After 8 mins the ref mysteriously stopped the game and called the managers and coaches onto the pitch for a meeting!! It turned out that someone was taking photographs and he was worried that his theatrical poses were going to appear on YouTube! (just kidding ref)
A better period for Brinscall then ensued with some good possession. First they had a free kick which was well intercepted by Callum then another free kick from 20 yards was headed out by Sam and then Callum was again involved in foiling another attack. The ball came loose in the Pumas penalty area and Conor had to be alert to kick it clear. Brinscall substituted their keeper which must be a rarity to have two keepers. He was quickly in action and was forced to make a good save. Dion was brought back on for Ben who had worked tirelessly in midfield linking the back four to the forwards with great presence. He received a well deserved ovation. Tyler and Lewis were combining cleverly down the left with two consecutive moves causing trouble for Brinscall defence. A counter attack by Brinscall broke down when one of their forwards was inches off-side when it looked like their best chance of the game. For all their dominance of possession Pumas were only winning by a narrow two goal margin but they set up another attack and overpowered Brinscall with their weight of numbers until the ball came to Elliot to tap home after 20 mins. 3 - 0.
A timely clearance by Sam gave Dion a long range chance which was well saved then Callum joined the attack causing Brinscall to concede a corner. Jack once again produced the goods and Eddie headed home accurately for what looked like a great goal. However the ref had seen some infringement which eluded everyone else and didn't allow the 'goal'. Lewis played skilfully before releasing Dion who forced another corner on the right again delivered accurately by Jack causing panic in the Brinscall defence before Elliot was again able to tap it home. 29 mins 4 - 0.
Another corner on the right was cleared out to Callum poaching on the edge of the penalty area and with his left foot he shot powerfully only to see his shot crash against the bar in what was virtually the last of the action.

Another very satisfying performance from Pumas with excellent contributions from every position. The defence is looking especially strong and in 120 mins of football so far they have restricted their opponents to just one meaningful attempt at goal!

Euxton Villa v Ladybridge Pumas

This was Pumas' debut in the Central Lancs League and they had to play away at one of the most respected clubs in the district. With several new players in the squad and new rules and other factors to cope with this was a potentially difficult fixture.

Pumas 13 man squad consisted of:- Conor (1), Caleb (4), Sam (2), Tyler (16), Ben (8), Callum (15), Lewis (9), Matthew (5), Robert (6), Eddie (3), Jack (17), Dion (9), Elliot (10).

The pitch had a pronounced slope and Pumas played uphill in the first half in calm and dry weather. The early exchanges were even with Villa showing some nice passing moves and good skills. After 4 mins Pumas attacked down the right and Dion crossed accurately for Eddie to miss making contact by inches with an open goal at his mercy. After 6 mins a good shot from Dion was well saved and the ball came out to Jack who quickly fired in a high shot well out of the keeper's reach for Pumas first goal at this level. 0 - 1. On 10 mins a clever throw in from Matthew caused panic in the Villa defence and in the mad scramble one of the Villa defenders was hurt.
Pumas were dominating possession and their forwards in particular were scrapping for every 50/50 ball. During this phase they were especially dominant down the left wing with Ben, Eddie and Matthew linking well. From one of these attacks after 14 mins the ball came loose to Tyler whose long range powerful shot was well out of the keeper's reach. 0 - 2. Caleb and Sam looked in control at the back and linked up well with Ben and Callum who were dominating midfield. Lewis made a well-timed tackle to break up a rare Villa attack and then fed a lovely through ball for Dion to run on to but the move broke down with some desperate defending from Villa.
After 17 mins Villa won a throw in on the right in Pumas half. The ball was beatifully crossed for a Villa forward to head powerfully goalwards only for Conor to be brought into action with a flying full length save only for the ball to drop at a forward's feet for a tap-in goal. 1 - 2.
This set-back stung the Pumas into action and a period of Pumas dominance followed. There was a sustained attack after 20 mins with Pumas forwards queuing up to score with Villa defenders trying to scramble the ball clear. This move broke down when a Pumas forward accidentally handled. Robert and Elliot came on for Tyler and Eddie and soon after another great cross from the right by Dion just failed to find Robert in front of a gaping net. The ball came out to Caleb who was poaching upfield and fired in one of his trademark long range shots which agonisingly crashed against the post and bounced to a defender. Then it was Ben's turn to try to get on the score sheet with another long range effort which went narrowly over the bar. A minute before half time came the best move of the match so far with Robert and Ben exchanging passes before feeding the ball to Matthew who made no mistake with a powerful long range shot. 1 - 3 Half time.
Playing downhill in the 2nd half Pumas immediately attacked down the left and Ben's strong run forced a corner which was cleared. Then Dion crossed from the right setting up a long shot from Ben which the keeper managed to fumble away. Pumas persistence won another corner taken by Robert which the defence could only partially scramble away to Elliot whose snap long shot after only 2 mins found the corner of the net. 1 - 4.
After 7 mins Pumas were clearly enjoying their downhill advantage and Villa were having to work very hard to keep in the game. Jack cut in from the left and fired in a cross/shot which flew across the face of the goal then after a scrappy bout inside the left side of the Villa penalty area the ball came to Elliot who prodded it home from short range with typical poacher's instinct. 1 - 5.
2 mins later Dion broke through the defensive wall and opened up a 5 yard gap with only the keeper to beat when the ref blew his whistle late judging him to have been offside. Very close thing. Pumas weren't to be denied for long though and Tyler showed great strength and skill in his own half before releasing a lovely pass for Dion to run on to and with the keeper coming out fast he shot quickly. The ball would have missed the right hand post but Elliot was backing up to pounce and turn the ball home to complete his hat-trick. 1 - 6. The Villa keeper was hurt as he came out and had to be substituted.
Villa were only attacking rarely but when they did they looked dangerous. Callum did good work to contain these breakaways but Sam and Caleb were called into action too. After 16 mins Dion made a fantastic run down the left wing beating several defenders as he bore down on the goal only to be foiled by a brilliant last ditch tackle which would have been worthy of Sam. A minute later Caleb had to be alert to break down a Villa attack. All credit to Villa for keeping trying when they must have been shell-shocked at the beating they were getting. The ball was worked out and came to Dion who was hungry to get on the scoresheet and he made no mistake with a great shot to give the replacement keeper no chance. 1 - 7
Villa continued to be under pressure and were forced to pass back to the keeper who tried to dribble the ball out only to lose it to Jack whose good shot was well blocked. On 27 mins Pumas were awarded a free on the left edge of the Villa penalty area and Caleb strode up to take it. Pumas supporters have seen Caleb score many great goals from similar positions but on this occasion the Villa keeper made a good save from a well struck shot. Villa were not finished and made a determined attack down the right which looked dangerous for a time until the Pumas defence gained control again. Then as the clock ticked down Jack made a good run down the left then passed to Eddie who flicked it inside to Elliot who turned it just inside the post for a beautifully worked final goal.

This was a brilliant team performance with every player in every position making a positive contribution. Pumas have announced their arrival in the Central Lancs League with a BANG!!
